UNA WOMEN DOWN WEST GEORGIA 73-62

FLORENCE – Ivy Wallen scored 26 points as the University of North Alabama women's basketball team remained undefeated on the season with a 73-62 Gulf South Conference win over West Georgia Monday afternoon at Flowers Hall. The win keeps the Lions perfect on the year at 9-0, including a 3-0 mark in GSC games.
 
UNA led by as many as 24 in the third quarter before the Wolves used a strong fourth quarter to close the game. Wallen, did most of her damage from three-point range, including buzzer-beater from three quarters of the length of the floor to close the first half. The freshman from Anderson finished the game 5-of-13 from three-point range.
 
North Alabama led just 32-28 at the 3:40 mark of the second quarter before closing the half on an 11-1 run. Four different players scored for the Lions down the stretch. After a pair of free throws by Katelyn Nunley gave UNA a 40-29 lead in the final minute of play, West Georgia held for the final shot and attempted a three-point attempt with 3.2 seconds remaining. Wallen grabbed the defensive rebound and had time for one dribble before launching a shot from 57 feet away. The shot was on target, sending the Flowers Hall crowd into a frenzy and giving the Lions a 43-29 lead at the break.
 
UNA began to pull away in the third quarter. A 17-7 spurt gave the Lions their largest lead of the game. A transition basket by KeKe Gunter made the score 60-36 with 4:29 remaining. North Alabama held a 23-point advantage in the fourth quarter before UWG closed the game on a 17-5 run over the final 8:13 of playing time.
 
Gunter finished with 14 points and nine rebounds on the day while Nunley added 13 points for the Lions. Jaclyn Heath also had a game-high seven assists.
 
West Georgia, which suffered its first loss in GSC play, was led by De'Ashia Jones' 18 points. With the loss, UWG falls to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in league action.
 
UNA will not play again until Dec. 31, beginning a GSC road swing at Valdosta State.
