UNA RALLY COMES UP SHORT AGAINST LADY STATESMEN

FLORENCE – After trailing by as many as 15 points in the fourth quarter, a comeback attempt by the University of North Alabama women's basketball team came up short in a 55-52 home loss to Delta State Saturday afternoon at Flowers Hall. The first home loss of the season leaves the Lions with a 15-4 overall record and 9-4 mark in Gulf South Conference play.

UNA outscored the Lady Statesmen 20-9 in the final period, getting within three points with possession of the ball in the closing seconds. Emma Wallen's three-point attempt with five seconds left, however, was off the mark. DSU grabbed the defensive rebound and ran out the clock to preserve the win.

The victory by Delta State avenges a 57-49 setback to the Lions on Jan. 12, giving each team a road win this year in the home-and-home series.

DSU was able to exploit its size advantage in the post throughout the contest. Centers Kaelin Kneeland and Aspriona Gilbert combined for 27 points. The Lady Statesmen also held a 39-31 rebounding edge and outscored UNA in second-chance points 12-2.

North Alabama never led on the day and was able to stay within striking distance despite hitting only 3-of-17 three-point attempts. A steal and layup by Elise Holden with 5:51 remaining made the score 48-40 as the Lions pulled within single digits for the first time since early in the third quarter.

Delta State led 53-46 at the 1:44 mark when a runner by Ivy Wallen cut the lead to five. DSU got single free throws on its next two possessions while the Lions got two foul shots by Ivy Wallen and a jumper by Emma Wallen with 12.1 seconds to go to cut the lead to 55-52.

UNA forced a turnover on the ensuing inbounds play, but could not connect from three-point range.

For the game, UNA shot 36.7 percent from the floor, including a 27 percent showing in the first half. The Lions went the first 7:49 of play without a field goal.

Delta State led 22-17 at the break before opening the second half on an 11-2 run to stretch the lead to double digits.

Ivy Wallen led North Alabama with 17 points. Emma Wallen added 10 points for the Lions. UNA was playing without starter KeKe Gunter, who was sitting out due to concussion protocol.

Alondrea Rush led Delta State (8-10 overall, 5-8 GSC) with 15 points on the day.

UNA will travel to Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at Spragins Hall on the UAH campus in Huntsville.
