BRANCH, WOLVES DOWN UNA MEN 88-80

CARROLLTON, Ga., – Stephaun Branch scored 35 points and pulled down 15 rebounds to lead West Georgia to an 88-80 Gulf South Conference win over the University of North Alabama men's basketball team Thursday evening in Carrollton, Ga. The second straight loss leaves UNA with a 12-11 overall record, including a 7-10 mark in GSC play.
 
UNA remains a half game ahead of West Georgia (9-13 overall, 6-10 GSC) for the eighth and final spot in the upcoming GSC Tournament. The Wolves, however, now own the tiebreaker after getting an 86-71 win over UNA earlier in the season.
 
On Thursday, Branch was 11-of-20 from the floor with a trio of three-point baskets. He was also 10-of-10 from the free throw line, including six in the final 30 seconds to put the game out of reach.
 
The game featured seven ties and 16 lead changes. Branch, who scored the final 14 points for the Wolves, gave UWG the lead for good with a trey in the final minute of play. His three-pointer with 40 seconds remaining gave the Wolves an 82-80 lead.
 
The big shot came seconds after Dimario Jackson's jumper had given UNA its last lead of the game at 80-79 with 57 seconds to play. UNA missed its last four shots from the floor.
 
Four players reached double figures for North Alabama, including Jackson's 24-point effort on the night. Johnell Ginnie added 15 points while Sharwyn McGee tossed in 14 points for the Lions. Austin Timms rounded out the top performers for UNA with 10 points and eight rebounds.
 
UNA led 38-34 at the break before the Wolves rallied. UWG shot 60 percent from the floor in the second half to regain momentum.
 
UNA will play at West Alabama on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. at Pruitt Hall on the UWA campus in Livingston.
