LIONS DROP OVERTIME GAME AGAINST 14TH-RANKED VSU

FLORENCE – No. 14 Valdosta State overcame a 13-point deficit in the second half to escape with a 101-99 overtime victory against North Alabama Saturday afternoon in Gulf South Conference men's basketball action. After regulation ended in an 82-82 tie, the Blazers outscored UNA 19-17 in the extra period to improve to 19-2 overall and 12-1 in GSC play.

North Alabama was in position to win at the end of regulation with possession of the ball in a tie game in the final minute of play. After a missed three-point attempt, the Lions got one more shot after grabbing an offensive rebound with less than 24 seconds remaining. Kendall Stafford's three-point attempt, however, was off the mark to set up the overtime period.

UNA led 86-85 early in overtime before the Blazers scored eight straight points to take control. VSU stretched the lead to 97-89 before the Lions connected on a pair of three-pointers and got a runner by Jeff Hodge to pull to within 99-97 with 5.6 seconds remaining.

Winston Morgan then sank two free throws for the visitors to seal the win. A putback by Adrian Smith at the buzzer resulted in the final score. With the loss, UNA falls to 10-10 overall and 5-8 in league play.

UNA led 45-37 at the break and stretched the lead to double digits early in the second half. A transition basket by Hodge gave the Lions a 56-43 lead with 15:56 remaining. The Lions led 61-48 before VSU used a 10-2 run to get back in the game.

VSU took its first lead of the second half on a dunk at the 5:22 mark. The lead changed six more times down the stretch.

Kendarius Smith hit six three-point baskets and scored 24 points to lead the Lions. Stafford added 22 points and 10 rebounds on the day. Sharwyn McGee turned in another double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds while Hodge rounded out the top scorers for the Lions with 10 points.

Clay Guilozet led Valdosta State with 24 points.

UNA will play at Christian Brothers on Feb. 1. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on the CBU campus in Memphis.
