UNA WOMEN DOWN VANDERBILT 74-71 TO OPEN SEASON

NASHVILLE, Tenn., – Four players reached double figures in scoring as the University of North Alabama women's basketball team opened the 2018-19 season Tuesday evening with a 74-71 win at Vanderbilt. The historic win came in the Lions' debut at the NCAA Division I level.

After leading by as many as 21 points in the first half, UNA held off a late rally to get the win. Vanderbilt (0-1) took the lead on three different occasions in the third quarter, but the Lions responded each time and never trailed in the final period. A potential game-tying three-pointer by the Commodores at the buzzer was off the mark, sending the UNA bench into a celebration.

Emma Wallen scored 19 points to lead North Alabama. Kenysha Coulson added 15 points while Ivy Wallen turned in 13 points, eight rebounds and seven assists on the night. Brittany Panetti rounded out the top scorers for the Lions with 12 points.

UNA (1-0) used a fast start to take control early before holding off the Commodores down the stretch.  A three-point basket by Emma Wallen capped a 12-2 run to open the game for North Alabama. It was the 179th career three-pointer for the junior, who entered the game tied for the career record in the category. Another trey by Emma Wallen gave the Lions a 28-10 lead in the final minute of the first quarter. UNA led 28-11 at the end of the first period.

The largest lead of the game came early in the second quarter after Coulson grabbed an offensive rebound and putback to make the score 32-11 with 9:05 remaining. The teams traded baskets before Vanderbilt began its comeback to get within striking distance. The Commodores closed the period on a 21-5 run to cut the deficit to 39-34 at the half.

A layup by Autumn Newby gave Vanderbilt its first lead of the game at 41-40 with 7:15 remaining in the third quarter. The Lions, however, quickly responded with a basket by Ansley Eubank. After the Commodores scored again on the ensuing possession to go ahead 43-42, Emma Wallen again connected from three-point range to give UNA a 45-43 lead.

The home team's only other lead of the night came at the 2:32 mark of the third quarter when a transition basket gave Vanderbilt a 51-50 advantage. A jumper by Panetti, however, put UNA back on top and the Lions never trailed again. North Alabama closed the quarter on a 10-2 run. Ivy Wallen's basket in the closing seconds gave the Lions a 60-53 lead heading into the final period.

Free throw shooting helped North Alabama maintain the lead down the stretch. The Lions were 8-of-10 from the foul line. Vanderbilt tied the game at 65 and 67, but Ivy Wallen hit two free throws each time to regain the lead for UNA.

After stretching the lead to four twice in the final 1:25, the Lions held off one last push. Leading 73-71, Coulson hit 1-of-2 free throws with 10.2 seconds remaining to give UNA a 74-71 lead. Brinae Alexander's three-pointer then rimmed out as time expired.

For the game, Ivy Wallen was 8-of-9 from the free throw line, including a 6-for-6 showing in the fourth quarter. Emma Wallen finished with five three-pointers on the night.
