SMITH’S SHOT LIFTS LIONS PAST TIGERS 67-66

FLORENCE – A three-point basket by Kendarius Smith in the closing seconds gave the University of North Alabama men's basketball team a 67-66 home victory over West Alabama Thursday evening at Flowers Hall.

The Lions trailed by two points after UWA connected on 1-of-2 free throws with 13.5 seconds remaining. UNA inbounded the ball and worked up the right side of the court before losing possession on a drive to the basket. Luke Scott, however, was able to dive on the loose ball and find Smith on the left wing. The junior from Camden, Miss., buried the trey from 25 feet away with .5 seconds to play.

The win gives UNA a 15-12 overall record with a 10-10 mark in Gulf South Conference play. The Lions suddenly find themselves as the No. 6 seed in next week's conference tournament after West Alabama was ruled ineligible for the post-season play. North Alabama will play at Christian Brothers on Tuesday, Feb. 27, in the opening round. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Canale Arena on the CBU campus in Memphis.

Against UWA, the Lions took a 26-25 into the half, but trailed most of the final 20 minutes of play. The Tigers led 59-54 at the 3:07 mark and held a 65-62 advantage after hitting to free throws with 24.5 seconds remaining.

Following a UNA timeout, Smith drew a foul and hit two foul shots with 14.3 seconds to play. The Lions fouled in the inbounds play to send UWA's Jake Jobling to the line with 13.5 seconds on the clock. After hitting the first free throw, he missed the second to set up the final sequence.

Kendall Stafford led North Alabama with 17 points and 10 rebounds to record his fifth double-double of the season. Trenton Clayton added 16 points while Smith finished the night with 12 points.
