LIONS DROP GSC OPENER TO WEST FLORIDA

FLORENCE, Ala. – The University of North Alabama dropped its Gulf South Conference baseball opener and saw its six-game home winning streak end in the process as the Lions came out on the short end of a 5-0 decision to West Florida.

After four scoreless innings, West Florida scored the game's first run in the fifth inning when UNA's Tyler Joyner hit two batters and UWF's Jacob Silverstein delivered a two-out single to drive in Trevor Payne.

The Argonauts added three runs in the sixth inning on a combination of three hits and two UNA errors. Only one of the runs was earned. Robert Lopez had an RBI-double, Mason Dinesen and RBI-single and the final run scored when Brandon Harmon reached on an error.

The game's final run scored in the eighth after Lopex doubled off Joyner and Dinesen doubled off UNA reliever Bryant Claunt to make it 5-0.

UNA had just two hits in the game and was shutout for the first time since the final game of the 2016 season.

Joyner (2-2) took the loss, allowing five runs, two earned, on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts over seven and two-thirds innings. Claunch pitched an inning and a third and allowed just one hit with one strikeout.

Tony Kucera (2-1) got the win, pitching five scoreless innings. Dylan Mills-Derouen pitched four scoreless innings to get his first save.
