NORTH FLORIDA DOWNS UNA MEN IN ASUN OPENER

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., – North Florida built a 21-point lead at the half and maintained a double-digit lead over the final 20 minutes to grab a 96-67 home win Saturday over the University of North Alabama men's basketball team. With the loss, UNA falls to 3-13 on the season and opens ASUN Conference play with an 0-1 mark.
 
The Ospreys shot over 60 percent from the floor in each half, including a 20-for-32 (62.5 percent) showing in the first half. UNF led 15-13 midway through the opening period before taking control. The Lions struggled to score the rest of the way as the home team closed the half on a 33-14 run. Back-to-back three-point baskets gave the Ospreys a 48-27 lead at the break.
 
North Alabama trailed by as many as 24 points early in the second half before making a rally. Christian Agnew scored 11 points during a 13-0 spurt as the Lions closed the gap to 62-51 with 11:07 remaining.
 
The Osprey answered with a 15-0 run to pull away. UNA went scoreless for 4:09 until a pair of free throws by Jamari Blackmon made the score 86-59 at the 3:51 mark.
 
For the game, North Florida was 37-of-60 from the floor with 13 three-pointers. Both teams grabbed 33 rebounds.
 
Agnew scored 20 points to lead UNA. Blackmon added 15 points while Kendarius Smith also reached double figures with 12 points for the Lions. Noah Horchler led North Florida (7-9 overall, 1-0 ASUN) with a game-high 23 points.
 
UNA will host Florida Gulf Coast Tuesday in its ASUN home opener. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
