FGCU HANDS UNA WOMEN FIRST ASUN LOSS

FLORENCE – Defending ASUN champion and preseason favorite Florida Gulf Coast had three players reach double figures in a 68-52 victory over the University of North Alabama women's basketball team Tuesday evening at Flowers Hall. The second loss of the season gives the Lions a 10-2 overall record and 1-1 mark in league play.

The Eagles (11-4 overall, 2-0 ASUN) opened the game on a 17-5 run and were able to answer each time UNA pulled within single digits. FGCU led 17-9 at the end of the first quarter and took a 34-21 lead into the half.

After falling behind by as many as 15 points late in the third quarter, North Alabama used a late run to stay within striking distance. A three-point basket by Ivy Wallen closed the period on an 8-2 spurt. The Lions got within seven points early in the fourth quarter after a basket by Emma Wallen made the score 50-43 with 9:44 remaining.

The Eagles, however, answered with a three-pointer on the ensuing possession and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way. UNA got a three-pointer from Kenysha Coulson to make the score 60-50 at the 3:46 mark, but would not connect from the field again.

North Alabama held a slim 38-37 advantage in rebounding, but struggled from the three-point line. The Lions connected on just 3-of-17 attempts from long range while FGCU hit seven treys on the night.

Ivy Wallen and Brittany Panetti scored 14 points each to lead the Lions. Coulson also reached double figures with 11 points. Destiny Washington led Florida Gulf Coast with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

UNA will host NJIT on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
