PANETTI, WALLEN LEAD LIONS PAST NJIT

FLORENCE – Brittany Panetti and Ivy Wallen combined for 45 points on Saturday as the University of North Alabama women's basketball team defeated NJIT 72-60 at Flowers Hall. With the win, UNA improves to 11-2 overall and 2-1 in ASUN Conference play.
 
Trailing by a single point midway through the first quarter, the Lions used a 10-3 run to take the lead and never trailed again. A three-point basket by Wallen at the end of the period gave the home team a 22-16 lead.
 
UNA stretched its lead to double digits in the second quarter before the Highlanders rallied at the end of the half. A three-pointer by Darby Madden gave the Lions a 32-19 lead at the 8:03 mark. UNA led by 11 points after a basket by Panetti made the score 36-25 with 4:08 remaining. The Lions, however, would not connect from the floor again as NJIT closed the second quarter on an 8-2 spurt to make the score 38-33 at the break.
 
North Alabama led by as many as 15 points in the second half. A basket by Ivy Wallen made the score 67-52 with 5:11 remaining. NJIT got within eight points down the stretch but could get no closer. The Highlanders would not hit a shot over the final 2:24 of playing time.
 
Panetti led the way with 26 points. Wallen added 19 points on the day. The two junior also each missed a double-double with Panetti pulling down nine rebounds and Wallen dishing out nine assists.
 
UNA will play its next ASUN game at Jacksonville on Jan. 15. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. (Central) on the Dolphins' home floor in Jacksonville, Fla.
