FLORENCE – Three players reached double figures in scoring and the University of North Alabama men's basketball team used another solid defensive outing to down visiting Morehead State 67-57 Saturday afternoon at Flowers Hall. The first two-game winning streak of the season gives UNA a 4-4 record.
UNA held the Eagles to 34 percent shooting in the first half and took a 28-22 lead into the break. A 10-0 run later gave the Lions their largest lead of the day. Christian Agnew had five of his game-high 17 points during the spurt. A basket by Cameron Diggs at the 5:40 mark gave North Alabama a 57-41 lead and the Lions were able to hold off Morehead in the closing minutes.
The Eagles got within five points with 1:40 remaining. A three-point basket cut the UNA to lead to 59-54, but the Lions hit 8-of-10 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Holding the late five-point lead, UNA held the visitors without a field goal until a trey with 13 seconds left. C.J. Brim hit 3-of-4 free throws while Agnew went 3-for-4 and Mervin James went 2-for-2 from the foul line after each getting defensive rebounds.
Peyton Youngblood added 16 points for North Alabama. The junior from Birmingham had four three-pointers and added six rebounds. James led all players with 12 rebounds on the day. Jamari Blackmon rounded out the top scorers for the Lions with 12 points.
James Baker led Morehead State (4-4) with 14 points.
UNA will play at Troy on Wednesday, Dec. 4. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Trojan Arena on the Troy campus.
