FLORENCE – Liberty overcame double-digit leads in each half to record a 61-57 win over the University of North Alabama women's basketball team Saturday afternoon at Flowers Hall. With the loss, UNA falls to 17-4 overall and 8-3 in ASUN Conference play.

With five games remaining in the season, UNA remains tied with Stetson for second place in the ASUN standings. The Hatters lost at home to league-leading Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday.

Against Liberty, the Lions shot 33.3 percent from the floor in each half. UNA was 5-for-19 from three-point range and 16-of-22 from the free throw line.

After taking a 19-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, North Alabama later extended the lead early in the second period. Brittany Panetti took a pass from Kenysha Coulson and scored to UNA a 26-16 lead. The Lions, however, would go scoreless over the final 7:35 of the half. The Flames tied the game with 10 straight points, then took a 27-26 lead into the break after hitting 1-of-2 free throws win 1.3 seconds remaining.

In the second half, North Alabama again stretched its lead to double digits. Liberty did not score for the first 4:38 of the third quarter. Four different UNA players scored during a 12-0 run as the Lions grabbed an 11-point lead. A basket by Panetti put the home team ahead 38-27 at the 5:41 mark.

The Flames responded with nine straight points to get within two. A basket by Coulson in the final minute of the quarter gave UNA a 43-38 lead.

North Alabama was unable to pull away in the final period. After stretching the lead back to nine points midway through the fourth quarter, the Lions again went cold on offense. Liberty scored 10 straight points to grab a 52-51 lead with 4:46 to play.

UNA tied the game three times down the stretch but could never regain the lead. A jumper with 59 seconds remaining gave the Flames a 59-57 advantage and UNA missed its last three shots from the floor.
