UNA WOMEN FALL TO NO. 4 SEED WITH LOSS AT LIBERTY

LYNCHBURG, Va., – A scoring drought at the end of the first half proved costly for the University of North Alabama women's basketball team in a 61-48 loss at Liberty Tuesday evening. The Flames stretched a four-point lead with 5:03 remaining into a 19-point advantage at the half and fought off several UNA comeback attempts over the final 20 minutes of play.

With the win, Liberty grabs the No. 3 seed in the upcoming ASUN Conference Tournament. UNA (19-7) falls to the No. 4 seed and will host North Florida in the quarterfinal round on Friday.

Against Liberty, the Lions trailed 23-19 after two free throws by Ivy Wallen. The Flames scored the next 15 points to close the half. A three-point basket in the final minute of play gave the home team a 38-19 lead.

After the two teams traded baskets early in the third quarter, the Lions used an 8-0 run to close the gap. Ansley Eubank and Brittany Panetti each had a pair of baskets during the spurt. A steal and layup by Eubank made the score 40-29 with 4:25 remaining in the period.

Liberty, however, took advantage of a flagrant foul against the Lions by hitting a free throw and connecting on a basket to stretch the lead back to 14 points. The Flames led 52-35 heading into the final period.

UNA made another move down the stretch, opening the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run. Emma Wallen hit two free throws and Ivy Wallen followed with a three-pointer and another basket off a turnover to make the score 52-42 at the 9:03 mark.

The Lions then forced a turnover and had possession, but could never get within single digits. For the game, UNA forced 28 Liberty turnovers, but could only convert them into 15 points.

A three-pointer by Liberty's KK Barbour started a 9-0 run by the Flames and North Alabama never recovered.

UNA shot 35.2 percent from the floor and was 3-of-21 from three-point range.

Panetti finished with 16 points to lead the Lions. Ivy Wallen also reached double figures with 10 points despite foul trouble leading to limited playing time. Barbour led Liberty (14-15) with a game-high 17 points.

Tip-off for UNA's quarterfinal game against North Florida is set for 6:30 at Flowers Hall.
