UNA WOMEN FALL TO NORTH FLORIDA IN ASUN TOURNEY

FLORENCE – North Florida erased a three-point deficit in the final two minutes to claim a 55-53 victory over the University of North Alabama women's basketball team Friday in the opening round of the ASUN Conference Tournament. With the loss, UNA ends its first Division I season with a 19-8 record.

After trailing by as many as eight points in the third quarter, North Alabama rallied to tie the game at 50-50 in the closing minutes. A three-point basket by Ivy Wallen then gave the Lions a 53-50 lead with 2:28 remaining.

UNA, however, would not score again. The Ospreys closed the game with five straight points, taking the lead for good with a free throw in the final minute of play.

The Lions had two chances to tie or take the lead in the final 21 seconds. With UNF nursing a 55-53 lead, Jazz Bond came up with a blocked shot in the paint. The Ospreys secured the defensive rebound, but could not put the game away at the foul line.

After two missed free throws gave UNA one final shot, Emma Wallen's contested three-pointer was off the mark as time expired. It was part of a dismal long-rang shooting performance for the Lions, who connected on just 4-of-24 treys on the night.

UNA held an early 8-4 lead before North Florida closed the first quarter on a 13-3 run. The Lions trailed by as many as seven points in the second quarter before closing the half strong. A jumper by Ivy Wallen with 37 seconds to play cut the deficit to 29-28 at the break.

The two teams traded baskets early in the third quarter before the Ospreys scored eight straight points to grab a 39-31 lead. North Alabama got within two before a pair of free throws with second seconds left gave the visitors a 41-37 lead heading into the final period.

A basket by Ivy Wallen at the 3:01 mark of the fourth quarter gave UNA its first lead of the second half at 50-48. UNF quickly answered with a layup by Elli Bartley on the ensuing possession.

Brittany Panetti scored a game-high 19 points to lead North Alabama. The junior from Katy, Texas, added six rebounds, four steals and four blocked shots on the night. Ivy Wallen and Kenysha Coulson finished with 11 points each. Bond led UNF (15-13) with 13 points and three blocked shots.
