LIONS TAKE DOWN FGCU 70-65

FLORENCE – Four players reached double figures in scoring as the University of North Alabama men's basketball team knocked off Florida Gulf Coast 70-65 Saturday afternoon at Flowers Hall. With the win, the Lions improve to 8-11 on the season and 3-3 in ASUN Conference play.

UNA trailed 27-26 at the half and faced a 60-57 deficit with less than three minutes remaining. After a pair of free throws by Mervin James cut the FGCU lead to a single point, the Lions got a defensive stop. Jamari Blackmon then missed a runner, but Emanuel Littles was there for the tip-in to give UNA a 62-61 lead with 2:17 to play.

Following another UNA stop on defense, C.J. Brim connected on a basket and free throw to complete a three-point play and put North Alabama on top by four points with 1:16 remaining.

Another free throw by James extended the lead to 66-61 before the Eagles got a basket with 25 seconds to play. Blackmon, however, hit four straight free throws down the stretch to put the game out of reach.

It was the fourth time this year UNA has won after trailing at the half. UNA closed the game on a 13-5 run and hit 12 of their final 14 free throws down the stretch. FGCU drops to 0-3 all-time at Flowers Hall.

North Alabama led 17-12 midway through the first half, but went more than seven minutes without a field goal while the visitors grabbed momentum. A three-pointer by Aleksa Matic ended the drought.

FGCU got a trey to take a 27-24 lead with 1:22 remaining in the half. UNA answered with a basket by Littles at the 1:02 mark. Neither team scored again, sending the Eagles to the half with a one-point lead.

Christian Agnew led UNA with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting. James and Brim finished with 13 points each while Blackmon also reached double figures with 11 points for the Lions. Caleb Catto led FGCU (6-15 overall, 3-3 ASUN) with a game-high 23 points.

UNA will play at Kennesaw State on Jan. 23. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. (Central) at the KSU Convention Center.
