LIONS DROP 3-2 HOME DECISION TO BELLARMINE

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama volleyball team missed a chance to pick up its first ASUN Conference win of the season with a 3-2 home loss to Bellarmine on Friday. After falling behind 2-1 in the match, the Lions forced a fifth set before falling 18-16 in the final frame. The 25-17, 22-25, 21-25, 25-22, 16-18 loss leaves UNA with a 10-5 overall record and 0-3 start to conference action.
 
Taylor Floyd and Anna Katherine Griggs combined for 33 kills on the night, but the Knights had three players reach double figures, including Jayme Scott's match-high 25 kills.
 
After the Lions won the opener, Bellarmine's two straight wins gave the Knights a 2-1 lead. A 25-22 UNA win then pushed the two teams into a fifth set for the fourth time in the last five meetings.
 
In the fifth, Bellarmine raced out to a 9-5 lead before the Lions rallied. Trailing 14-12, North Alabama fought off two match points to tie the score. A kill by Floyd then gave UNA a 15-14 lead and a match point of its own.
 
The set was tied again at 15-15 and 16-16 before the visitors scored two straight points to get the win.
 
Floyd had 20 kills on the night and finished with a .250 hitting percentage. Griggs hit .303 and finished with 13 kills. Elif Ozsoy had a season-high 50 assists.
 
Defensively, Ella Ratzloff recorded 23 digs. Ozsoy and Floyd also had 14 digs each.
 
UNA will host Eastern Kentucky on Sunday. Match time is set for 1 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
