Ferworn shares second ASUN Golfer of the Week award

Sophomore becomes first Lion to win back-to-back individual crowns

FLORENCE, Ala. (October 17, 2024) – Following his second career win earlier this week, University of North Alabama men's golf sophomore Andrew Ferworn shared the Atlantic Sun Conference Men's Golfer of the Week award announced on Thursday.

This award comes after Ferworn won the Turtle Point Invite in Killen, Ala. hosted by the University of North Alabama from Oct. 14-15. He placed first in the tournament with a 13-under-par 203 stroke score, shooting a 66-66-71 throughout the three-round tournament, respectively.

He shares this award with Austin Peay's Seth Smith after his play at the Buddy hosted by Murray State. Smith had a round of eight-under to also win the individual crown.

The home course proved to be helpful for Ferworn as he became the first North Alabama golfer to win the individual crown since 2019's Aaron Jackson. This also was the best three-round tournament score by a Lion to win the Turtle Point Invite. Ferworn's first career individual win came in the last tournament at the Cullan Brown Collegiate and he snagged his second in the previous one.

Ferworn led all 70 players the entire tournament which included players from Alabama, Auburn, Missouri, Samford and others. He finalized the tournament with 14 birdies, which was one away from first place and holed one eagle. He led all players in par-fours by three strokes and landed in third for par-fives on the two days. After the past two individual crowns, Ferworn climbed to 104th in national individual rankings.

This is the first time a North Alabama golfer has won back-to-back individual medals in the Division I era. This is the first time the Lions have had three ASUN Golfer of the Week awards in the same season. Ferworn set his highest finish in the Cullan Brown Collegiate and did it for the second time this season alone; his previous high was seventh.

Ferworn led the Lions to the overall team win, first place win and the course record of 839 which was five strokes better than the previous for 25-under; this was the third-lowest round of the Division I era. The Lions won their fifth straight Turtle Point Invite and their sixth during the Division I era.

"Fully deserved," said UNA head coach Austin Phillips. "His game has matured to where when he's playing well, it goes very well. But even on days it's not his best, he still puts together a solid round. We are proud of him and looking forward to a great season by him."

Ferworn is the newest addition to the list of Lions who have won the ASUN Conference Golfer of the Week award in the Division I era. UNA has won the award 10 times since moving to Division I with seven golfers contributing to that total.

Earlier this season, Luo won it after the GMAC Invitational where he placed first overall and Ferworn won it after winning the Cullan Brown Collegiate . There have never been three Lion winners in the same fall or spring season since joining the conference in 2018.

UNA ends the fall season at the FAU Golf Invitational in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. set for  Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 28-29 at the PGA National (Champion).
