SAVANNAH, Ga. (February 18, 2024) – The University of North Alabama men's golf team closed out round three of the Savannah Intercollegiate at The Club at Savannah Harbor in dominant fashion, winning the team title with individuals
Sebastian Bengtsson and
John Logan sharing individual medalist honors for the tournament.
North Alabama wrapped up the second team victory of the season with a 14-stroke advantage over second place Harvard. After closing out round one with the third-best score of 287, UNA turned in a second round team card of 12-under-par 276. In the final round, UNA extended the lead with a 285 to give a final total of 848 at 16-under-par. The Lions finished just ahead of Harvard, Longwood and Columbia in the top four. Iona, USC Beaufort, Sacred Heart, Siena, North Carolina Central, Fairleigh Dickinson, Holy Cross, SCAD and Dartmouth rounded out the rest of the field.
This serves as the second team victory under Schmitz Family Head Men's Golf Coach Austin Phillips in just six tournaments while leading North Alabama. The Lions took home the team crown at the MartinFed Invitation in Killen, Ala. back on Oct. 17, 2023.
Bengtsson began the day in sole possession of second place, and thanks to an even round of 72, the Helsingborg, Sweden native jumped to first place. Bengtsson's second round of 66 on Saturday was the second-lowest round of UNA's Division I era. The Swedish golfer tallied 11 birdies and an eagle on his way to the individual crown.
Logan would match Bengtsson, finishing with a final total of 209 at seven-under-par. The freshman from Wilmington, N.C. tied for the best round of any golfer in the third round with a two-under-par 70 to propel him from third to first — tying him with Bengtsson.
Logan and Bengtsson are just the fifth and sixth golfers to win an individual tournament title for UNA at the Division I level and are the first to do so since
Francois Jacobs won the Gulf Coast Collegiate last spring season.
Freshman
Andrew Ferworn rounded out Lion golfers in the top 10, tying for seventh place with a four-under-par 212.
Eric Luo turned in a one-under-par 71 third round to jump from 36th to finish tied for 20th place.
Chase Kaiser closed the tournament out with a 225 to tie for 41st, while individual
Cory Abbott tied for 46th with a 226.
The team led the field in birdies (52) and eagles (2) and wrapped up the tournament with a stellar score of 24-under-par on par fives.
