Lions slip in second round of ASUN Championship

Junior Andrew Ferworn leads Lions in fifth place after day two

VALDOSTA, Ga. (April 22, 2026) – The University of North Alabama men's golf team slipped to ninth place at the 2026 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship on Wednesday with a 14-over round at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta, Ga.

Junior Andrew Ferworn continues to lead the Lions after 36 holes of play. He is currently tied for fifth as he shot even par through the second round. The Houston, Texas native logged four birdies with a 34 score on the front nine.

Ferworn led the field for a majority of the day before Sebastian Gamboa took the lead down the stretch with two birdies and an eagle.

North Alabama was one of just a few teams yesterday that did not have a double bogey; the team finished with five today. The Lions did not have a golfer shoot under par on Wednesday; the team had eight birdies and an eagle on the front nine but managed just five birdies on the back stretch.

Outside of Ferworn, Sebastian Bengtsson was the only other golfer with a front or back stretch that was not over-par. He earned an even-36 on his front nine.

As Ferworn finished tied for fifth, the rest of the group all landed in a tie for 41st. Bengtsson climbed one spot on day two with his three-over day. Jedd Brady (+5), Arthur Estas (+6) and Xing Luo (+6) all dropped in day two.

Brady knocked in an eagle on hole two after he stuck the shot just feet away for the second amongst the group during the tournament.

After finishing top-three yesterday, North Alabama directly competed with No. 59 Florida Gulf Coast and No. 131 North Florida. Ferworn was paired with the current Valdosta leader, Gamboa. Freshman Arthur Estas was accompanied by fourth-place finisher Sacha Ruiz.

Florida Gulf Coast officially took the reins Wednesday with a second consecutive round of six-under.

After dropping into group two with their fifth-place finish yesterday, Stetson stormed back and had a commanding 12-under to lead the field. The Hatters settled with a 10-under to rise three spots into sole possession of second-place.

Lipscomb finished five-under to take third, while Eastern Kentucky jumped one spot into fourth as EKU's Anders Larson is tied for second. These four teams were the only ones to shoot under-par for day two.

North Florida fell four spots today after a seven-over second round to claim fifth, while Central Arkansas rose one for sixth. Austin Peay steadied in seventh, while Queens jumped North Alabama for eighth place.

After UNA, Jacksonville, West Georgia and Bellarmine occupy the final three spots.

North Alabama opens the final round of the ASUN Championship at 7:00 a.m. CT with Xing Luo leading the Lions off on Thursday on hole 10.
