NOTES

LAST TIME OUT: North Alabama and Jacksonville met in a battle of first place teams on Saturday, as the Lions came out victorious with a decisive 92-79 win over the Dolphins inside CB&S Bank Arena. This marked Jacksonville's first ASUN road loss this season. Taye Fields and Jacari Lane combined for 46 points in the win. UNA has 19 wins and 11 ASUN wins for the most single season wins in the program's seven-year Division I history.

RECEIVING VOTES: North Alabama received 37 votes in this week's College Insider Mid-Major Top 25 Poll — the most UNA has received all season. Lipscomb is the only other ASUN team recognized with 74 votes, which is the most among unranked teams.

SCOUTING THE LIONS: North Alabama is 19-8 overall and tied for first in the Atlantic Sun Conference with Lipscomb with an 11-3 record. UNA has the third ranked offense and defense in the ASUN with 79.6 PPG and just 71.1 PPG allowed. The Lions are the top rebounding team in the league with 38.7 boards per game, led by the duo of Taye Fields and Corneilous Williams who are first and second on the individual leaderboard.

SCOUTING THE WOLVES: West Georgia in the first year of a Division I transition with a 5-22 overall record and a 3-11 mark in ASUN play. The Wolves have four Division I wins so far, including Tennessee Tech for their first win as a DI program. The Wolves also own ASUN wins over Austin Peay, North Florida and Bellarmine. Shelton Williams-Dryden leads with 16.9 PPG and 7.5 RPG. Kolten Griffin led UWG in the first meeting with UNA with 17 points.

SERIES HISTORY: North Alabama has a chance to even the all-time series on Tuesday night, as West Georgia leads the series 37-36 in 73 all-time meetings. The first meeting came in 1982 as members of the Gulf South Conference. The two teams played yearly until 2018 when UNA moved up to Division I. This season marks the first as dual members of the ASUN. UNA won the first meeting this season with a 78-61 road victory in Carrollton.

LAST MEETING: Just over a week ago, four Lions scored double-figures and Corneilous Williams tied the Division I school record with 19 rebounds in the 78-61 win at West Georgia. UNA led the entire way and had 23 points off the bench, including 16 from six-man Donte Bacchus. Fifth-year senior Will Soucie led with 17 points.

WATCH OUT FOR LANE: Junior guard Jacari Lane was named to the Lou Henson Early Season Watch List, an award given to the top mid-major basketball player each season. Lane has also won ASUN Player of the Week four times this season, which is tied for the fifth-most in league history. He is averaging 16.4 PPG and is the only remaining first team All-ASUN selection back in the league this year.

RECORD WATCH: Lane is on the verge of single-season and career Division I school records on Tuesday. He is 13 points away from breaking the career scoring record by a Division I Lion with 1,332 career points. The record is currently held by Jamari Blackmon with 1,346 points, good enough for sixth all time. Lane is also two assists away from tying his own Division I school record for single-season assists at 122. He set the record as a freshman and broke it as a sophomore.

KEEPING IT 100: Fifth-year senior Will Soucie is the all-time leader in career games for UNA with 143 appearances. He recently scored his 1,000th career point against Central Arkansas and is one start away from his 100th career start.

FIRE IT UP: Senior Daniel Ortiz is not afraid to pull up behind the arc, as he is fourth in the nation with 247 three-point attempts. Not only does he shoot them, but he makes them. Ortiz ranks 17th nationally with 81 made triples for a respectable 32.8 percentage.

PROTECTION: UNA ranks sixth in the nation with just 9.1 turnovers per game. Only 26 teams of 364 in the NCAA turn the ball over less than 10 times per game.

STATE OF BASKETBALL: Many have claimed the state of Alabama is producing the best basketball in the nation this season, and the case is compelling. Of the 10 Division I schools in the state, eight are ranked in the top two of their conferences and in the top 140 of the NCAA NET. Nine of the 10 won on Saturday with the exception of Alabama, who played top-ranked in-state rival Auburn.

ON DECK: On Thursday, UNA will travel to Nashville for a highly-anticipated matchup at Lipscomb. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
