NOTES
THE RUNDOWN: North Alabama recently went toe-to-toe with the reigning national champions, the Tennessee Volunteers, for a midweek game. The Lions allowed five runs in the first inning and then one in the second and third before holding the Vols scoreless for the rest of the game. When Tennessee went cold, the Lions got hot, scoring two in the top of the third. They added one in each of the final three innings and had the tying run at the plate before falling short of their upset bid at No. 1 Tennessee on Tuesday. Tennessee is the second SEC opponent North Alabama has played this season so far with three more on deck. This was the closest game for Tennessee this year as they have mercy ruled five of their seven games prior with the other closest game being a 5-1 win over Samford.
SERIES HISTORY: This is the sixth meeting between these two since North Alabama records were kept in 1984. The Lions are 2-3 in this matchup since, including a three game series last season at Mike D. Lane Field where UAB took two of three. The earliest recording came in 1973 under head coach Rick Lindsey where the Lions fell 12-6. They played twice in 1979 where UNA went 1-1 against the Blazers.
SCOUTING THE BLAZERS: The Blazers are 6-2 on the young season. UAB recently played against No. 21 Troy at Riddle-Pace Field where they fell 7-4. The Blazers were on a six-game win streak up to that point as they only other loss came in their opening day game against Maryland. UAB has stayed in the state of Alabama with most of their contests as they have four games split between Alabama A&M and South Alabama. Logan Braunschweig is the name to know as he leads the team in batting average (.462), runs scored (12), hits (12), home runs (1), total bases (18), walks (10) and stolen bases (7).
WHEN UP…: The Lions are 3-4 on the season and typically get off to a hot start offensively in most games, scoring 13 of their 24 runs in the first three innings. After the end of the sixth inning, if leading, the Lions see all three of their wins. If trailing after the sixth, they have lost four. The best comeback attempt was recently against No. 1 Tennessee, being down 7-2 heading into the top of the seventh and scoring three runs to close the gap before falling.
HOT BAT: The Lions are 3-2 this season when scoring first and 0-2 when the opponent scores first. The two losses when scoring first came against No. 25 Auburn thanks to a Nash Rippen two-run bomb in the top of the first. The other came against Army on opening day where they scored the lone run in the bottom of the first. Scoring first and scoring 3 or more runs leaves North Alabama at a 3-1 record. If the bats get hot early, the Lions have a good shot of winning.
ROAD WARRIORS: North Alabama is in the process of building Mike D. Lane Field at Bank Independent Stadium, which is currently scheduled to be ready in April. The Lions will play on the road and at neutral site venues until then. For more information, click here.
HOME AWAY FROM HOME: Due to the ongoing renovations for Mike D. Lane Field at Bank Independent Stadium, the Lions will play on the road and at neutral site venues for the year. They open conference play against Central Arkansas, which was supposed to be a home series. Thanks to the UAB Blazers, the Lions will travel back down to Young Memorial field March 14-16 to host the Bears as the home team.
UP NEXT: UNA will continue its travel as the Lions head to Nashville, Tenn. to play Belmont on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. inside of E.S. Rose Park.
