NOTES

LAST TIME OUT: North Alabama secured a much-needed road win on Saturday, snapping a five-game skid with a hard-fought 82-73 victory over Bellarmine in Louisville. Down 33-32 at halftime, UNA scored 50 points in a near-flawless second half. The Lions finished 11-21 from downtown, including 8-9 from sixth-year senior Dallas Howell for a career-high 24 points. Redshirt junior Corneilous Williams had a double-double by the first half and finished with 20 points and 15 rebounds.

SCOUTING THE LIONS: UNA is 6-9 overall and 1-3 in ASUN play so far. Over the first four games of conference play, junior point guard Canin Jefferson has been the key player for UNA. He is averaging 18.0 PPG in four starts, shooting 22-52 from the field (42 percent) and 21-25 at the line (84 percent). Senior Donte Bacchus is averaging 14.8 points per game in league play, while Corneilous Williams averages 10.3 PPG and 7.7 RPG in three ASUN games. The last two games saw a pair of true freshmen emerge with Braylon Patton scoring 13 points at EKU and Cortez Graham-Howard scoring 10 with seven assists and five rebounds at Bellarmine.

SCOUTING THE OSPREYS: North Florida is the only ASUN team without a conference win so far, owning a 2-15 overall record and an 0-4 record in league play. UNF has played the 66th-hardest schedule of 365 teams in the nation, according to KenPom. The Ospreys have been involved in some high scoring games, scoring 78.8 PPG while allowing 90.1 PPG. The Ospreys rank ninth in the nation with 11.4 made three-pointers per game. Kamrin Oriol leads with 19.9 PPG, including 28 points against West Georgia and 29 against Queens last week. Bobby Kennen enters his 17th season in the program, but his first as the head coach after taking over for former long-time coach Matthew Driscoll.

SERIES HISTORY: This will be the 14th meeting between North Alabama and North Florida. The Ospreys have a 7-6 advantage in the series, although UNA has won each of the last four meetings and five of the last six. Last season, Donte Bacchus scored a season-high 21 points in a 90-84 road win over the Ospreys. Corneilous Williams notched a double-double in the last meeting, an 83-70 win in Florence. UNF seeks its first win in the series since 2022.

LAST MEETING: UNA won the last meeting on Feb. 13, 2025 by an 83-70 final in Florence. The Lions held UNF to its third-lowest scoring total of the season, as the Ospreys led the league in scoring at the time. UNA won the boards with a 53-30 advantage, including a 21-9 advantage on the offensive glass. Corneilous Williams and Taye Fields both had 14 rebound-double-doubles.

LEAGUE LEADER: Corneilous Williams is back on top in the ASUN for individual rebounding, leading the league at 9.7 per game. Williams also ranks 22nd nationally. He has ranked atop the league for all but one week of the season. He scored 20 points and 15 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season.

CAN'T MISS DALLAS: Sixth-year senior Dallas Howell had a career-high 24 points at Bellarmine on Saturday, shooting 8-9 from behind the arc. Howell played his 113th game with the program, tying him with Jamari Blackmon for most Division I appearances by a Lion. The first spot is held by Will Soucie with 151 games. Soucie attended the game at Bellarmine on Saturday as a fan.

SIX YEARS OF HOWELL: Howell has been with the program since 2020, earning a COVID season and an injury redshirt last season. He is one of just seven known players in Division I this season to play for six seasons. However, Howell is the only one of those seven to do it at the same school. The other schools with a sixth-year player include Oklahoma, Iowa State, USC, Texas, Bowling Green and Tarleton State.

HELPER, HELPER: In Saturday's win, the Lions had 15 assists with 13 coming from true freshman Cortez Graham-Howard and junior Canin Jefferson. Graham-Howard had seven to set a season-high for any Lion this season. Jefferson matched his career-high with six.

DECADE BETWEEN DOMINANCE: Against Bellarmine on Saturday, UNA won the rebound category by a 32-19 margin. The 19 rebounds are the fewest allowed by UNA since 2015. UNA outrebounded Union (TN) by a 56-19 margin in an 84-63 win back during the Division II era. The 19 rebounds by Bellarmine this year are the fewest allowed under Coach Tony Pujol.

CARDIAC LIONS: Last season, UNA finished with an 0-8 record when trailing at halftime. All 24 wins came when tying or ahead at the break. This season, however, UNA has a 4-5 record when trailing at the break, including a 33-32 deficit at the break against Bellarmine. UNA also overcame halftime deficits against Jax State, San Francisco and Lane College.

TRENDS TO WATCH: UNA is 5-1 when outscoring opponents in the paint and 6-1 when outrebounding opponents this season. The Lions, oddly, are 1-4 when shooting over 40 percent behind the arc while 5-5 when shooting under 40 percent.
