NOTES
LAST TIME OUT: North Alabama got off to a solid start against ASUN leader Austin Peay on Saturday, but an 11-0 run midway into the first half sparked a 91-62 win for the Govs inside F&M Bank Arena. UNA once again played without the services of
Canin Jefferson and
DarKaun King, relying on their five starters for most of the contest. All but four points came from the starting unit. True freshman
Braylon Patton made the most of his start with a career-high 19 points, matching teammate
Donte Bacchus. Speaking of Bacchus, he is averaging 21.0 points per game over the last four outings, including 21 at Central Arkansas last week.
SCOUTING THE LIONS: UNA just completed a five-game road stretch that would have been broken up by a home game on Jan. 24, but due to the recent ice storms that hit most of the region, the home game against Central Arkansas was moved to Feb. 9. The Lions have been shorthanded as of late, utilizing its starting five for almost all of the last two games.
Donte Bacchus continues to lead the team with 14.5 PPG, while
Corneilous Williams is tied for the ASUN lead in rebounding with 9.5 per game. The Lions look to move up the ASUN standings down the stretch, currently 7-15 overall and 2-9 in league play.
SCOUTING THE BEARS: Central Arkansas is perhaps the most-improved team in the ASUN this season — and definitely one of the hottest right now — owning a 14-10 overall record and a 9-2 record in the ASUN to sit among the top two teams in the league. The Bears are riding a seven game win streak and are among the ASUN leaders in defense with just 74.4 PPG allowed. Camren Hunter ranks fourth in the league with 18.8 PPG in conference play. John Shulman, former head coach at UAH and Chattanooga, is in his second season building the program at UCA.
SERIES HISTORY VS. UCA: North Alabama leads the all-time series with an 11-5 record. Central Arkansas recently snapped a three-game skid in the series with an 81-60 win over the Lions last Wednesday in Conway. UNA swept the season series last season and has won five of the last seven in the series dating back to 2023. UNA owns a 5-2 record in CB&S Bank Arena when hosting Central Arkansas.
SCOUTING THE WOLVES: West Georgia is another team that has improved from last season, as the Wolves bring an 11-13 overall record to Florence with a 5-7 record in league play. UWG recently snapped a three-game losing streak on Saturday with an emphatic 87-73 win over Jacksonville. While
Corneilous Williams has been leading the ASUN in rebounding, Shelton Williams-Dryden of West Georgia has given him a run for his money. He is the only other player averaging more than nine rebounds per game, as he is currently tied with Williams at 9.5 RPG. He is also second in the ASUN in scoring with 20.5 PPG.
SERIES HISTORY VS. UWG: North Alabama and West Georgia have played 74 times dating back to the Division II days as rivals in the Gulf South Conference. The series is currently at an even split with 37 wins for each team. The first meeting took place in 1982 and the Lions and Wolves played yearly until 2018 when UNA moved up to Division I. UWG made the move last season, reigniting the rivalry. UNA won both games last year with a 78-61 win in Georgia and an 80-62 win in Florence.
SHOWING UP: UNA looks to lead the ASUN in average attendance for a second straight season, currently averaging 2,300 fans per game. The Lions averaged 2,367 fans per game last season, ranking ahead of FGCU and Lipscomb in second and third, respectively. UCA is also one of eight teams in the ASUN averaging over 1,000 fans per game.
