NOTES

THE RUNDOWN: The UNA baseball team dominated Austin Peay 15-5 on Sunday in eight innings to accomplish the sweep at Joe Maynard Field at Raymond C. Hand Park. The Lions are now the first Atlantic Sun Conference Gold Division member to 10 conference wins, sitting in sole possession of first place. Austin Peay had not been swept in Clarksville since April 28-30, 2023 against Florida Gulf Coast. North Alabama owns their seventh sweep of a conference opponent during the Division I era. This is the fourth Division I era conference sweep completed on the road — the others were 2023 at Bellarmine, 2023 at Kennesaw State and 2025 at Central Arkansas. This is the second conference sweep of the season for UNA with the other coming against Eastern Kentucky at home. In total, the Lions have three sweeps this season as the other came in non-conference play against Saint Louis in February. This is the first season since 2023 with three sweeps for the Lions.

SERIES HISTORY: This will be the 49th all-time meeting between the two programs dating back to 1982. The Lions are 19-6 at home against the Skyhawks and boast an overall record of 34-14. Since the beginning of UNA's first Division I season in 2019, UNA holds an 8-5 advantage and a 1-0 record when playing UTM in Martin. Last week, the Lions hosted the Skyhawks in a midweek game where they dropped the matchup, 6-5 to break a seven-game winning streak over UTM.

SCOUTING THE SKYHAWKS: Since coming to Florence last week, UT Martin earned a 3-1 record through the past four games. The Skyhawks now sit at 18-17 for the season with a 5-7 conference record after their series win over Tennessee Tech. The Skyhawks are 15-8 when playing at Skyhawk Baseball Field. UTM has scored in double figures six times through the 31 games played with all leading to wins. When UT Martin scores nine or more runs in a game, the team is 9-2. When the Skyhawks allow an opponent to score 10 or more runs in a game, they are 1-11. Colten Payton is an offensive power for UTM with 53 hits this season, 42 RBIs and a .363 batting average – both RBIs and batting average are category leaders.

RIPPEN REACHES: Senior left fielder Nash Rippen has been outstanding from the plate this season. On Sunday, April 12, Rippen reached base safely for the 32nd consecutive game in a row. This milestone surpasses the great Luke Harper who reached base consecutively in 31 straight games in 2022. This streak started on Feb. 17 against UAB at home when Rippen went 2-for-4 with a run, home run and two RBIs.

FIRST PLACE FEVER: After the sweep of Austin Peay, the Lions are in sole possession of first place in the ASUN Gold Division. Ahead of the past weekend, North Alabama was tied with Lipscomb and Austin Peay for first. However, Lipscomb dropped their Central Arkansas series at home but won the final game on Sunday. North Alabama sits one game ahead of the second-place bellarmine Knights who also are coming off their own sweep of Eastern Kentucky. This is the first time in Division I history that UNA is alone in first place; the Lions are currently two games back of ASUN Graphite Division leader, North Florida, which leads the entire ASUN.

LAST TUESDAY: UTM came to Florence the last Tuesday, April 7, taking the 6-5 win back to Tennessee. North Alabama was down 6-2 in the ninth inning of the game before pinch hitters Gio Lonero and Cayden Sheffield put two in scoring position. Petey Craska hit for a three-run home run to pull within one, but the Skyhawks escaped with their first win over UNA since 2022.

UP NEXT: After the home midweek against UT Martin, North Alabama hosts Lipscomb at Mike D. Lane Field at Bank Independent Stadium beginning on Friday, April 17 at 7 p.m.
