Lions take fifth place at Independence Golf Club in Richmond

Senior Blake Henriques posts three-under final round to climb 23 spots

RICHMOND, Va. (April 7, 2026) – The University of North Alabama men's golf team finished the Giles-Sprately Collegiate in Virgina on Tuesday in fifth place at Independence Golf Club.

Senior Blake Henriques owned the best round of a Lion golfer at three-under in the final 18. The last-second addition, who was added to the lineup on short notice Sunday, saw five birdies and an eagle en route to a scorecard of 69. He was the only UNA golfer with an eagle and claimed a 33 score (-3) on the back nine with only one bogey.

Three of the five Lions moved up in the rankings. Henriques jumped 23 spots from the day prior for the most of any UNA golfer while Jedd Brady flew up the board 19 spaces and Andrew Ferworn went up 20.

Thanks to the trio aforementioned, the Lions jumped up one spot as the team had the best round of their tournament at six-under. Charleston had the best final round at 12-under while North Alabama had the second-best at six-under.

UNA sunk 20 birdies for their five golfers on the final day of play; this led them to fourth for the category with 51 total. North Alabama finished third for par 5s with a 4.55 score when it came to those holes just behind host institution Richmond and tournament leader College of Charleston.

College of Charleston finished the tournament at 29-under with ASUN foe FGCU in second at 16-under. Liberty (-11) and Richmond (-9) round out the teams ahead of the Lions. These were the only five teams to shoot-under par through the three rounds.

North Alabama finished ahead of No. 68 Stetson who finished in sixth at even par while North Florida finished in 11th (+9) and Jacksonville claimed 12th (+13).

Brady led the squad after his resurgent and even par day in 22nd. He shot two-under with four birdies and his 70 scorecard through the final 18.

Andrew Ferworn claimed 27th after his 70 score at two-under as well. After the first three holes, the junior birdied six holes and and mad nine pars — he had the best back nine of any UNA golfer with a 32 (-4).

Sebastian Bengtsson turned in a steady day for North Alabama with his one-over final round. He finished tied for 37th alongside senior Xing Luo. Luo finished with a 35 (-1) final nine holes.

"Overall, a good day today after a slow first two rounds," said The Schmitz Family Head Men's Golf Coach Austin Phillips. "All the guys were solid in their play which led to an overall great tournament. It was a big team effort for us this week. We know how good we could be, and we will continue to get better as we head into postseason play."

North Alabama travels for the ASUN Postseason Tournament on Tuesday, April 21 at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta, Ga.
