NOTES
THE RUNDOWN: The Lions dropped their first game to UT Martin since 2022 by a 6-5 decision on Tuesday at Mike D. Lane Field at Bank Independent Stadium. North Alabama had a ninth inning surge thanks to Gio Lonero, Cayden Sheffield and Petey Craska. The captain, Craska, hit a three-run shot that bounced and trickled over the right field wall to pull within one. This broke up UNA's seven-game win streak against the Skyhawks. UT Martin beat the Lions for the first time since 2022 and earn just their third win in Florence since 2019. The Skyhawks stole four bags in today's game to put runners in scoring position — UTM hit 4-for-4 with runners on third and less than two outs. The Lions had seven hits as Will Millard led the way with his 2-for-3 afternoon. The catcher plated a run and hit two doubles in the midweek.
SERIES HISTORY: This will be the 30th through 32nd all-time meetings between the two programs dating back to 1984. Austin Peay took the season series, 4-2 as the Govs went on to win the Gold Division. However, North Alabama was the only team to take a series win over APSU in 2025 through conference play. When in Clarksville, the Lions are 7-8 since 1982 and 1-7 since the transition to Division I. UNA has seen APSU each year since 2023 for conference matchups going 2-2 in series. In 2023 and 2024, these two squared for one series each while 2025 saw the move to ASUN divisional play where the two competed twice. This is the first of two series this season as Austin Peay will return to Florence for the final home series of the season.
SCOUTING THE GOVS: Austin Peay is coming off a midweek drop to Tennessee Tech, 7-5 on Tuesday to move to 16-17 overall. The Govs have only eight home games so far this year at a 5-3 record during the stand. APSU is tied with North Alabama and Lipscomb at the top of the ASUN Gold division. The Govs have played Bellarmine, Lipscomb, Eastern Kentucky and Central Arkansas with the Bisons the only conference opponent to take a series win against APSU this season. Four batters hit over .300 in the lineup in Andres Matias (.304), Ray Velazquez (.310), Paris Pridgen (.351) and Zion Taylor (.359). This is the first home game since March 22 for Austin Peay when it last hosted Lipscomb.
IF THE BATS GET HOT…: If the Lions out-hit their opponents in a game, UNA is 8-2 in those matchups while only 2-13 when being out-hit. Two or more home runs in a game also holds a 9-3 record. Notably, UNA is 12-3 when leading after the seventh inning and 13-1 after the eighth inning against opponents — home or away. However, the Lions have just two wins when trailing after the seventh and only one win trailing after the eighth inning this season.
ASUN PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Dylan Coleman was announced as the ASUN Player of the Week on Monday, April 6. This is only the fourth ASUN Player of the Week award for the Lions since the transition to Division I in 2018-19. The first came in 2019 for Reid Homan on April 15 and the second came in 2024 for Gehrig Frei, also on April 15. Will Millard won the third award a couple of weeks ago after his stellar play in the sweep against Eastern Kentucky. This now becomes the first season with multiple ASUN Player of the Week award winners during the Division I era. In 2024, Frei and then-pitcher turned UNA pitching coach Jacob James won Player and Pitcher of the Week honors within a week of each other. This is the eighth ASUN Weekly Award for the team since joining the conference. Under head coach Jad Prachniak's tutelage, this is the third ASUN Player of the Week award.
TIED UP!: After the series win over Central Arkansas, North Alabama now owns a 7-5 conference record and sits atop the ASUN Gold Division. This leads to a three-way tie for first place with Lipscomb and Austin Peay. North Alabama fell on the road to Lipscomb to open conference play 1-2 while Austin Peay dropped the series to the Bisons at home, 1-2. The Lions travel to Clarksville for their first matchup of the season with Austin Peay and the opportunity to break the tie of the first seed.
UP NEXT: After Austin Peay, North Alabama sees UT Martin in the midweek again. This time, the Lions head to Skyhawk Baseball Field in Martin, Tenn. on Tuesday, April 14 at 5 p.m.
