NOTES
THE RUNDOWN: The UNA baseball team split a Saturday doubleheader with Central Arkansas at Bear Stadium with a game one win, 12-4, and a heart-breaking extra-innings loss in game two, 4-3. In game one,
Nash Rippen hit a home run in the first inning to create the 2-0 lead. That home run gave Rippen his 17th of the season which ties the most all-time in a single season first set by Mike Burns in 1989 and D.J. Harris in 1993.The doubleheader was a last-minute change most likely due to weather incoming on Sunday. North Alabama scored seven runs in the sixth inning of game one to get the eventual 12-4 win to set up a rubber match for game three. The final game went to extra innings where a wild pitch helped UCA walk it off.
SERIES HISTORY: This will be the 12th all-time meeting between the two programs. The Lions are 2-10 all-time against the Racers with their most recent win coming earlier this season in February, 15-5. Before that win, the Lions only other win came in 2022 in Florence by a score of 6-4. This series dates all the way back to 1957 with the most recent meeting earlier this year.
SCOUTING THE RACERS: The last time these two matched up, the Racers had just taken the opening series against Ohio. Murray State has built an impressive resume at 28-24 this season with a 13-8 conference record this season. The Racers are only 6-6 at home, due to rebuilding components of their stadium a lot like 2025 North Alabama. So instead of home games, the team has played 14 neutral site matchups where they are 13-1 in those instances. Last season, Murray State finished 44-17, won the Oxford Regional and advanced past Duke in the Durham Super Regional to make the College World Series.
ALL-TIME RIPPER: Senior left fielder
Nash Rippen sent his 17th long ball of the season over the fence against Central Arkansas in game one of the Saturday double header. That famous number 17 tied him with Mike Burns (1989) and D.J. Harris (1993) for most home runs in a single season throughout North Alabama history. Rippen hit four home runs in February, four in March and eight in April to take the Division I single season record. His next home run will allow him to stand alone in the North Alabama record books.
MIDWEEK MANIA: North Alabama has split its midweek schedule perfectly down the middle this season with six midweeks at home and six on the road. Out of the 11 games so far, the Lions have won three with the first one coming against Murray State all the way back in February, 15-5. However, North Alabama went on a drought until their explosion against UT Martin on April 14 with a 21-3 win for the second midweek victory of the season. North Alabama returned the following week with a win over Tennessee Tech for their third win and are looking to sweep the season series against Murray State in Kentucky on Tuesday.
UP NEXT: After the final road game of the season against Murray State, the Lions get conference foe Austin Peay at home beginning on Thursday, May 14 at 7 p.m. to close out the regular season.
