JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (May 18, 2025) – The Atlantic Sun Conference announced Tuesday six University of North Alabama baseball student-athletes earned Academic All-ASUN honors, including Leighton Jenkins, Wes Walker, John Allen Stogner, Luke Davenport, Tripp Patterson and Gavin Oswald.
These are all first-time selections for North Alabama; the most recent selection for the Lions was Gehrig Frei in 2024.
To be eligible, undergraduate student-athletes must have a cumulative 3.50 GPA, participated in 50 percent of contests during the season, have completed four (4) semesters of college coursework or 50 percent of progress towards a degree and have one year of residence at the institution. Student-athletes in post-graduate programs must have a cumulative 3.50 GPA and have participated in 50 percent of contests during the season. Instead of 50 percent participation, pitchers must have pitched a minimum of 10.0 innings to be eligible for the Academic All-ASUN.
Since 2019, the Lions have had five Academic All-ASUN selections; two in each of 2019 and 2021.
The list for UNA is headlined by the three graduates — shortstop Leighton Jenkins, right-handed pitcher John Allen Stogner and left-handed pitcher Gavin Oswald. The sophomore trio bolsters the list with right fielder Wes Walker, right-handed pitcher Luke Davenport and left-handed pitcher Tripp Patterson.
Patterson, Oswald and Stogner all earned a perfect 4.0 GPA for the academic year.
"Well deserved recognition for this group," said head coach Jad Prachniak. "They get the job done on the field and in the classroom. They have dynamic personalities that have helped to elevate our program."
Walker and Jenkins led North Alabama to the most home runs in the league (82), and in conference play, the third-best batting average with a .297. A season ago, UNA finished in 10th in batting through the 2025 season; these two lifted the Lions to the fifth-best batting average over the entire season.
The four pitchers combined to give North Alabama this fifth-best pitching staff in the ASUN with an ERA of 5.65. The Lions are the best ASUN Gold Division team in that metric against ASUN opponents this season behind the four Graphite Division postseason teams.
These six Lions were integral pieces to leading North Alabama to their most wins in a Division I season with 28 and the most ASUN conference wins with 19. The team earned its first share of a ASUN Gold Division title; this is the first time since 2005 that UNA can claim a regular season or divisional title.
All-conference awards will be announced at 2 p.m. today.
