Eddie Flowers came to the UNA in the 1930s to serve as a physical education instructor and later coached the first Lion basketball and tennis teams. Coach Flowers was the school's first athletic director, holding that post until 1969, and led the Florence State basketball squads for 11 seasons with the 1934-35 mark of 10-5 standing as his best single season record at the school.

During his tenure at the school, he was instrumental in starting the Mississippi Valley and Alabama Collegiate conferences, which Florence State Teacher's College participated in during the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. In 1972, the university honored Flowers by naming the new basketball and physical education center in his honor - Flowers Hall. He is deceased.
