LIONS HOLD OFF WEST FLORIDA 91-83

FLORENCE – Da'Shaun Griffin scored 21 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to lead the University of North Alabama men's basketball team to a 91-83 home win over West Florida Thursday in Gulf South Conference play. UNA overcame a six-point deficit at the half to avenge an early-season loss to the Argonauts.

With the win, the Lions keep pace in the GSC race with an 8-4 league record, including wins over the two teams tied for first place. West Georgia and UAH each sport 9-3 conference marks. Delta State is also tied with UNA at 8-4.

On Thursday, North Alabama needed a strong showing midway through the second half to get things going. UNA faced a 46-40 deficit at the break and trailed 50-46 with 15:51 remaining. Austin Timms scored eight points during a 14-0 run to put UNA ahead for good. His consecutive baskets gave the Lions a 60-50 lead at the 12:25 mark.

West Florida stayed within striking distance, but could get no closer than four points. With the Lions nursing a 74-70 lead with 4:39 to play, UNA got a jumper by Timms and a three-point basket by Griffin to push the lead to nine. The Argonauts would get no closer than six the rest of the way.

After connecting on 53.1 percent from the floor in the first half, UWF was held to 15-of-33 shooting over the final 20 minutes of play. West Florida also struggled from the free throw line, hitting just 10-of-30 attempts on the night.

Timms finished the game with 20 points, including 15 in the second half alone. John Fletcher added 17 points while Jeff Hodge tossed in 14 points for UNA. Dimario Jackson rounded out the top performers for North Alabama with 10 points and eight assists.

Rashaan Benson led West Florida (3-12 overall, 2-10 GSC) with a game-high 23 points.

UNA will host Valdosta State on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
