UNA MEN STAY HOT WITH 78-64 WIN OVER VSU

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama men's basketball team overcame a slow start on Saturday to post a 78-64 Gulf South Conference win over Valdosta State. The fifth win in the last six games gives the Lions a 12-7 overall record with a 9-4 mark in GSC play.

On Saturday, UNA quickly found itself trailing by double-digits after the Blazers jumped out to an 18-5 lead. DeAndre McKinnie came off the bench and scored nine first-half points as the Lions closed the gap by the half. North Alabama got within four points before entering the half facing a 30-25 deficit.

In the second half, John Fletcher scored nine points during an 11-1 spurt as the Lions grabbed a 38-35 lead. UNA continued the run as Bilal Richardson got a basket, then a dunk on consecutive possessions. Two more free throws by Fletcher and a three-point basket by Da'Shaun Griffin gave UNA a 47-37 lead with 10:44 remaining.

The lead reached 15 on a basket by Tavaras Tolliver at the 5:25 mark before Valdosta State made one last push. The Blazers cut the deficit to nine on several occasions but could get no closers. With UNA holding a 74-64 lead with just under a minute to play, a steal and dunk by Austin Timms put the game out of reach.

Fletcher finished with a game-high 19 points to lead North Alabama. Richardson added another double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds while McKinnie rounded out the top scorers for the Lions with 12 points. For the game, UNA's bench outscored its VSU counterparts 25-6. The Lions also converted 17 turnovers into 27 points.

Justin Simon led four Valdosta State players with 14 points. The Blazers (11-7 overall, 7-6 GSC) were only 2-of-22 from three-point range.

UNA will travel to West Alabama on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Pruitt Hall on the UWA campus in Livingston.
