LIONS GRAB SECOND PLACE WITH 97-91 WIN AT UWG

CARROLLTON, Ga., – Bilal Richardson scored 26 points and pulled down 20 rebounds to lead the University of North Alabama men's basketball team to a key 97-91 road victory over West Georgia on Saturday. The win puts UNA second place in the Gulf South Conference with a 10-5 league record. The Lions are tied with UWG, but own the tiebreaker after recording the season sweep.
 
Richardson came off the bench to do his damage. The senior from Stone Mountain, Ga., was 8-of-12 from the floor and 10-of-12 from the free throw line. He had just six points and six rebounds at the half, but the Lions still took a 51-40 lead into the break.
 
UNA (13-8 overall) opened the second half on an 11-6 spurt to stretch the lead to 16 points. A basket by Austin Timms made the score 62-46 with 15:52 remaining. The Lions led 86-70 at the 4:25 mark before UWG made one final push.
 
The Wolves got to within a single possession in the final minute of play. A three-point basket with 38 seconds remaining made the score 89-87. Freshman Tavaras Tolliver pushed the lead to four with a pair of free throws while the Wolves could only counter by going 1-of-2 from the foul line at the other end of the court.
 
Richardson extended the lead to five with two foul shots with 25 seconds left Timms grabbed a defensive rebound off a miss on the ensuing UWG possession. His two free throws put the game out of reach. UNA was 8-for-8 from the charity stripe in the final minute of play with four different players hitting two shots each. For the game, the Lions made 33-of-40 free throws.
 
Timms tied a season-high with 20 points. Tolliver added 12 points while DeAndre McKinnie finished with 11 points on the night. Richardson, who is fourth in the GSC in rebounding, recorded his seventh double-double of the season.
 
West Georgia (13-7 overall, 10-5 GSC) was led by Iakeem Alson's game-high 27 points.
 
UNA will play at Shorter on Thursday, Feb. 4. Tip-off time is set for 8 p.m. Eastern on the SU campus in Rome, Ga. Two days later, the Lions will play at Lee.
