UNION DROPS UNA MEN 87-73

FLORENCE – Union connected on 14 three-point baskets and had five players reach double figures in scoring in an 87-73 win over North Alabama Thursday evening in Gulf South Conference men's basketball action. The loss for UNA, along with wins by Delta State and Valdosta State, put the Lions in a four-way tie for third place in the GSC with a 12-8 league record.

On Thursday, Union took the lead in the closing minutes of the first half and never trailed over the final 20 minutes of play. With the game tied at 35-35, consecutive three-pointers by Jordan Montgomery gave the visitors a 41-35 lead at the break.

UNA (15-11) could never regain the lead in the second half. A three-point basket by John Fletcher capped a 9-0 run and made the score 50-48 with 13:26 remaining. The Bulldogs quickly pushed the lead back to double digits with a 12-0 run of their own, getting a trio of three-pointers along the way. UNA would get no closer than 11 down the stretch.

North Alabama struggled to get to the free throw line, getting a season-low 15 attempts on the night. When the Bulldogs were not connecting from long range, they were driving to the basket and getting to the foul line much more often than the Lions. Union went 17-of-23 from the charity stripe and also owned a 42-35 advantage in rebounding.

Dimario Jackson scored a game-high 20 points to lead UNA. Fletcher and Austin Timms added 16 points each while Bilal Richardson scored 10 points and pulled down 17 rebounds.

Union (18-8 overall, 12-8 GSC) was led by Marterrace Brock's 18 points.

UNA will host Christian Brothers on Saturday to close out the home portion of the regular season. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
