JACKSON’S FREE THROWS HELP LIONS EDGE CBU 73-71

FLORENCE – Dimario Jackson connected on two free throws with exactly one second remaining to lift the University of North Alabama men's basketball team to a 73-71 victory over Christian Brothers Saturday afternoon at Flowers Hall. The win keeps the Lions in a three-way tie for third place in the Gulf South Conference standings with a 13-8 league record.

CBU led by as many as 12 points in the second half and led 47-38 with 15:19 remaining before the Lions (16-11 overall) rallied. North Alabama used an 11-2 run over the next four minutes to tie the game. Neither team led by more than four points the rest of the way.

A jumper by DeAndre McKinnie gave the Lions a 65-61 lead at the 4:29 mark. The basket, however, was the last field goal of the game for UNA. The Buccaneers responded with a three-point basket on the ensuing possession, but also went without a basket down the stretch.

Christian Brothers appeared to be in control with 1:20 to play. After Bilal Richardson picked up his fifth foul, J.T. Moody hit both free throws to give the Bucs a 71-67 lead.

Jackson drew a foul and hit two foul shots before CBU turned the ball over with just over a minute to play. On the ensuing possession, Jackson drove the lane to reach the free throw line again. His two shots tied the game at 71-71 with 33 seconds remaining.

The Bucs missed two potential game-winning shots in the closing seconds. Jackson grabbed the loose-ball rebound on the second attempt and was fouled with one second on the clock. The junior from Addis, La., then stepped to the line and calmly hit both free throws to seal the win.

UNA trailed 32-23 at the break before going 22-of-25 from the foul line in the second half. Jackson finished the game 8-for-8 at the charity stripe with 10 points. Richardson led all scorers with 21 points. Austin Timms added 14 points for the Lions.

Christian Brothers (11-16 overall, 9-12 GSC) was led by Drew Hildreth's 20 points on the day.

UNA will close out the regular season Saturday at UAH. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. at Spragins Hall.
