JACKSONVILLE STATE HOLDS ON TO DOWN LIONS 76-65

FLORENCE – A second-half rally came up just short as the University of North Alabama men's basketball team dropped a 76-65 home decision to Jacksonville State Saturday afternoon at Flowers Hall. The loss leaves the Lions with a 2-6 record on the season.

After trailing by as many as 20 points in the second half, UNA cut the deficit to single digits in the closing minutes. The Lions got within seven points twice down the stretch, but could get no closer. The Gamecocks shot 45.9 percent from the floor and had four players reach double figures in scoring.

JSU's largest lead came at the 17:45 mark of the second half, when a basket by Jason Burnell gave the visitors a 50-30 lead. North Alabama, however, responded with a 30-17 run to stay within striking distance.

UNA held the Gamecocks without a field goal for 4:05 and slowly chipped away at the lead. A pair of free throws by Jamari Blackmon made the score 67-60 with 2:55 remaining.

After JSU stretched the lead back to 10 points, the Lions made one more push. A basket but Blackmon cut the deficit to 72-65 in the final minute of play and the Lions had a chance to get closer after JSU added a free throw on the ensuing possession. The Gamecocks, however, grabbed a defensive rebound and hit 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Blackmon, a freshman from Hoover, finished with 22 points and nine rebounds to lead North Alabama. Kendarius Smith connected on a trio of three-pointers and added 12 points, while Kendall Stafford also reached double digits with 10 points on the day.

JSU (4-3) held the Lions to 32.2 percent shooting from the floor, forced 14 turnovers and had five blocked shots. Marlon Hunter led the way with a game-high 23 points.

UNA will play at UAB on Tuesday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Bartow Arena in Birmingham.
