VALDOSTA, Ga., – Ninth-ranked Valdosta State used a second-half run to pull away for a 98-75 home win over North Alabama Saturday in Gulf South Conference men's basketball action. The Blazers (25-2 overall, 18-1 GSC) led by a single point at the break before shooting 58.1 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes of play. With the loss, UNA falls to 14-12 overall and 9-10 in GSC action.

After VSU took a 46-45 lead into the break, the two teams traded baskets in the opening minutes of the second half. A 10-1 run by the home team then extended the VSU lead to 60-50 with 14:58 remaining. UNA responded with a three-point basket by Adrian Smith and a jumper by Kendarius Smith to stay within striking distance.

A long scoring drought proved to be the difference in the game for UNA. The Lions trailed 75-68 midway through the second half before going more than six minutes without a basket. By the time Jeff Hodge connected from the floor with 1:38 remaining, VSU had built a 21-point lead.

North Alabama was 10-of-33 from the floor over the final 20 minutes of play. Five players reached double figures in scoring for the Lions, including Kendarius Smith's 15-point effort. Trenton Clayton added 12 points while Kendall Stafford tossed in 11 points for UNA. Hodge and Tavaras Tolliver had 10 points each while Sharwyn McGee pulled down 11 rebounds.

Jimmy Kidet led five Valdosta State players with 25 points and 10 rebounds.

UNA will close the regular season on Thursday, Feb. 22, at home against West Alabama. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
