NJIT RALLIES FOR 76-70 OT WIN OVER UNA MEN

NEWARK, N.J., – The University of North Alabama men's basketball team let a seven-point lead slip away over the final 2:31 of regulation, then was outscored 11-5 in overtime as NJIT rallied for a 76-70 home victory on Sunday. With the loss, UNA falls to 8-15 overall and drops to fourth place in the ASUN standings with a 5-3 league record.

The Lions led 63-56 after a free throw by Emanuel Littles with 4:03 remaining in the fourth quarter. The seven-point advantage remained until the 2:31 mark, when the Highlanders began the comeback.

After getting a free throw to cut the lead to six points, NJIT got a steal and layup by Zach Cooks to make the score 63-59. Another free throw and a dunk in the final minute of play cut the lead to a single point.

Kendarius Smith extended the UNA lead to 65-62 with two free throws with 12.8 seconds remaining. NJIT, however, answered with a three-point basket by Donovan Greer with five seconds to play. A runner by Jamari Blackmon at the buzzer was off the mark, sending the game to overtime tied at 65-65.

The lead changed five times in the extra period. Two free throws by Kendall Stafford put UNA ahead 70-69 lead with 2:32 remaining. The Lions would not score again.

Cooks answered with a three-pointer on the other end. The sophomore added another basket and two free throws to seal the win after the Lions could not connect from the floor.

The two teams battled to a 34-34 tie at the half. North Alabama led by as many as eight over the final 20 minutes of play, but went without a field goal for the final 4:53 of regulation.

Smith led UNA with 21 points. Christian Agnew added 18 points, while Blackmon tossed in 12 points for the Lions. Cooks also had 21 points to lead NJIT (17-5 overall, 5-2 ASUN).

UNA will play at first-place Lipscomb on Saturday to officially complete the first half of ASUN play. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. at Allen Arena on the LU campus in Nashville, Tenn.
