UNA WOMEN TOP NORTH FLORIDA TO OPEN ASUN PLAY

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., – The University of North Alabama women's basketball team got double-doubles from Brittany Panetti and Ivy Wallen as the Lions won the program's first-ever ASUN Conference game with a 70-64 overtime victory Saturday at North Florida. The win gives UNA a 10-1 record on the season, with a 1-0 start to ASUN play.

After a basket by Wallen in the closing seconds of regulation tied the game at 58-58, UNA outscored the Ospreys 12-6 in the extra period. Panetti finished with game-high totals of 28 points and 13 rebounds. Wallen notched 15 points and 10 assists.

The game featured multiple momentum swings. North Florida opened the contest on a 19-5 run. The Lions, however, responded with a 14-0 run of their own to close the opening quarter. Panetti started the run with consecutive baskets. Emma Wallen capped it with a three-point basket to tie the game with 21 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

After taking a 31-28 lead into the half, North Alabama extended its lead to double digits in the third quarter. Another basket by Panetti gave the Lions a 38-28 lead with 7:45 remaining in the period.

UNA, however, would not be able to pull away. The Ospreys pulled to within four points at the end of the third quarter, then outscored UNA 14-10 in the fourth quarter. The home team led twice in the final four minutes, including a 58-56 advantage in the final minute of play. Ivy Wallen's layup with 33 seconds to play tied the game and both teams missed go-ahead shots down the stretch.

After the two teams traded baskets early in overtime, UNA took the lead for good with a free throw by Ansley Eubank. UNA stretched its lead to 63-30, but could not extend it to more than one possession until the final 14.1 seconds when a pair of free throws by Ivy Wallen gave the Lions a 67-62 lead.

Emma Wallen also reached double figures with 11 points for the Lions. Arianna Emanuel-Wrig led North Florida (5-7 overall, 0-1 ASUN) with 15 points.

UNA will return home on Jan. 8 to host Florida Gulf Coast. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
