FIRST-PLACE LIBERTY EDGES UNA VOLLEYBALL 3-2

FLORENCE – Liberty maintained first place in the ASUN by holding on for a 3-2 win over the University of North Alabama volleyball team Friday evening at Flowers Hall. The Flames improved to 11-5 overall and remained perfect in league play at 4-0 on the year while UNA dropped to 3-13 and 1-2 respectively.

The two teams traded wins throughout the match in the 25-18, 21-25, 25-20, 23-25, 15-8 Liberty victory. Anna Katherine Griggs hit .385 with a career-high 13 kills to lead the Lions. The freshman from Arab added seven blocks on the night.

Defensively, Mackenzie Sullivan also had a career-night with 34 digs. It was the third-highest single match total recorded in the ASUN this season.

After falling in the opening set, UNA was able to pull away late to even the match in the second frame. With the game tied at 19-19, the Lions scored six of the next eight points to get the win, including a kill by Sarah-Elizabeth Williams at set point.

Liberty again took the overall lead with a win in the third set before the Lions answered. Griggs had four kills in the fourth set alone as UNA fought to stay alive. With score tied at 23-23, consecutive service aces by Breylee Linder gave the home team the win and forced a deciding fifth set.

North Alabama could not carry the momentum into the final frame. The Flames scored the first three points and quickly jumped out to an 8-3 lead. The Lions would get no closer than four points the rest of the way.

Williams finished the night with 11 kills for UNA. Claire Bullington added eight kills and 11 digs while Mariana Trujillo also recorded a double-double with 12 digs and 28 assists. Linder rounded out the top performers with 18 assists for the Lions.

Liberty's Amelia Johnson led all players with 21 kills and 12 digs on the night.

UNA will continue ASUN play on Sunday by hosting Jacksonville. Match time is set for 1 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
