LIONS COME UP SHORT AT ALABAMA A&M

HUNTSVILLE – Alabama A&M hit a three-pointer at the first-half buzzer to take the lead, then outscored the University of North Alabama men's basketball team 52-41 over the final 20 minutes to record a 92-80 home victory on Friday. With the loss, UNA falls to 5-7 on the season, including an 0-7 mark in road games.
 
Cameron Alford scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Bulldogs (3-7). His trey at the end of the half gave A&M a 40-39 lead, but the freshman added 12 points in the second half as the home team pulled away late.
 
UNA led 57-52 after a basket by Emanuel Littles with 14:24 remaining when Alabama A&M made its move. The Lions went more than seven minutes without a field goal while the Bulldogs used a 19-8 spurt to grab a double-digit lead.
 
The lead reached as many as 19 in the closing minutes and remained double figures the rest of the way. A trey by Alford gave A&M an 88-69 lead with 3:12 to play. UNA could get no closer than 12, cutting the deficit to 92-80 in the final minute of play.
 
C.J. Brim hit a trio of three-pointers and led UNA with a season-high 22 points. Mervin James added 18 points. Christian Agnew tossed in 13 points while Littles finished with a double-double that included 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
 
The first half featured runs by both teams before the buzzer-beater gave the Bulldogs a one-point lead at the break. UNA led 24-13 after a basket by James at the 9:03 mark. The Lions, however, would not score for the next four minutes while the home team rallied.
 
Alabama A&M used a 17-0 run to take control. During the stretch, the Lions went 0-for-4 from the floor with three turnovers and a technical foul on head coach Tony Pujol. The Bulldogs hit three straight free throws after the call to take a 30-24 lead.
 
Agnew broke the scoring drought for UNA with a three-point play of his own. AAMU led by as many as eight before the Lions closed the half strong. A basket by Tavon King capped a 12-2 run to briefly give UNA a 39-37 lead. Alford, however, answered for the home team with a trey at the buzzer.
 
North Alabama shot 50.9 percent from the floor and held a 40-33 rebounding advantage.  The Bulldogs, however, had five players in double figures and connected on 23-of-30 free throw attempts.
 
UNA will play at Florida State on Dec. 28.Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. (Central) on the FSU campus in Tallassee, Fla.
