LIONS DOWN BIRMINGHAM-SOUTHERN 78-50

FLORENCE – Jamari Blackmon and James Anderson had five three-pointers each as the University of North Alabama men's basketball team evened its record on the season with a 78-50 home win over Birmingham-Southern on Sunday. The win gives UNA a 5-5 record on the year and keeps the Lions undefeated at Flowers Hall.
 
UNA used a late run in the closing minutes of the first half and maintained a double-digit lead over the final 20 minutes of play. The Lions led 41-35 with 1:19 remaining before closing the half with seven straight points. After two free throws by Peyton Youngblood, Anderson connected on a trey in the final minute. The junior from Roswell, Ga., then added a steal and basket as time expired to put North Alabama ahead 48-35 at the break.
 
UNA got baskets from all five starters to start the second half on a 10-0 run to grab a 23-point lead. A runner by C.J. Brim made the score 58-35 with 13:45 remaining. Birmingham-Southern would get no closer than 18 points the rest of the way.
 
The Lions led 70-48 at the 7:17 mark and BSC could manage only one field goal down the stretch. For the game, UNA held the visitors to 31 percent shooting, including a 1-for-10 showing from three-point range in the second half.
 
Blackmon led all scorers with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting. He was 5-of-9 from three-point range. Anderson connected on 5-of-8 three-point attempts and finished with a season-high 17 points. Cameron Diggs also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds for the Lions.
 
Ben Spence and Calvin Bak scored 10 points each to lead Birmingham-Southern (3-6).
 
UNA will have a nine-day break before hitting the road to face UAB on Dec. 17. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Bartow Arena.
