LIBERTY DOWNS UNA MEN 80-70

FLORENCE – Liberty shot 59.1 percent from the floor in the second half, including 11 three-point baskets to hold off North Alabama 80-70 Saturday in ASUN Conference men's basketball action. The fifth straight loss leaves UNA with an 8-19 overall record. The Lions also fall to a tie for sixth place in the league standings with a 5-7 conference mark.
 
The first half featured three ties and nine lead changes before the Flames got a three-pointer from Lovell Cabbil at the 5:24 mark to take a 22-21 lead. After stretching the lead to four down the stretch, Liberty got a defensive stop in the final minute and drained another trey with 3.8 seconds remaining to take a 35-28 lead into the break.
 
Liberty extended its lead to double digits in the second half. The visitors opened the period on a 17-10 run to reach their largest lead of the day at 52-38. UNA got a three-pointer by Jamari Blackmon on the ensuing possession and later used an 8-1 run to close the gap.
 
After converting a three-point play, Kendall Stafford connected on a trey from the top of the key to make the score 56-52 with 7:19 to play. The Lions would get no closer. Liberty answered with a three-pointer of its own before stretching the lead back to 68-58 with 4:50 remaining.
 
UNA got within five points on two free throws by Emanuel Littles in the final minute of play, but would not score again. The Flames were 3-of-4 from the free throw line down the stretch.
 
Kendarius Smith led North Alabama with 17 points. Blackmon added 16 points while Stafford finished with 15 points on the day. Cabbil turned in a career-high 30 points to lead Liberty (23-5 overall, 11-1 ASUN).
 
UNA will play at Kennesaw State on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. (Central) on the KSU campus.
