UNA WOMEN TOP JACKSONVILLE 68-59

FLORENCE – Emma Wallen and Brittany Panetti scored 21 points each to lead the University of North Alabama women's basketball team to a 68-59 win over Jacksonville Wednesday evening at Flowers Hall. With the win, the Lions maintain third place in the ASUN standings and move closer to hosting a home game in the opening round of the upcoming conference tournament.

With two regular-season games remaining, UNA is 18-6 overall and 9-5 in ASUN play. The Lions can clinch a home game in the first round with a win Saturday afternoon against Lipscomb or a North Florida loss on the same day.

On Wednesday, UNA became the first team all season to out-rebound Jacksonville in ASUN play. Every UNA player that saw action pulled down at least one rebound on the night as the Lions held a 36-34 advantage in the category.

North Alabama trailed 14-13 at the end of the first quarter before taking control with a 16-8 spurt in the second period. After the Dolphins stretched their lead to five points early in the quarter, a basket by Panetti started a 16-2 run for UNA. Kenysha Coulson and Darby Madden each hit three-pointers during the run. Coulson added a runner with 2:20 remaining to give the Lions a 29-20 lead.

Jacksonville added a basket in the final minute of play to cut the UNA lead to 29-22 at the half.

The two teams traded runs in the third quarter. After five straight points by Panetti gave the Lions a 10-point lead, JU answered with consecutive baskets to cut the deficit to 34-28 at the 6:53 mark.

The UNA lead shrank to 41-39 before Wallen connected from three-point range with 2:43 remaining. Madden then hit a trey at the third-quarter buzzer to give UNA a 51-42 lead heading into the final period.

JU got within four points twice in the fourth quarter but could get no closer. After the Dolphins cut the lead to 58-54, Wallen connected on back-to-back three-pointers to push the lead to double digits with 2:36 to play. The visitors could get no closer than seven the rest of the way.

Wallen finished the night 7-for-19 from the floor with four three-point baskets. She scored 15 points in the second half. Panetti pulled down a game-high eight rebounds and recorded her second straight 20-point game. Ansley Eubank also added four points, five rebounds and eight assists for the Lions.

Rolanda Hayes led Jacksonville (14-14 overall, 7-8 ASUN) with a game-high 24 points.

Tip-off for UNA's home game Saturday against Lipscomb is set for 1 p.m. at Flowers Hall. The Lions will close the regular season on March 5 at Liberty.
