FLORENCE – Four players reached double figures in scoring as the University of North Alabama women's basketball team defeated Lipscomb 71-50 Saturday afternoon at Flowers Hall. The win gives the Lions a 10-5 record in ASUN play, clinching a home game in the first round of the upcoming conference tournament.
With the win, UNA (19-6) can finish no lower than fourth in the ASUN standings. The Lions will play at Liberty on March 5, with the winner claiming the No. 3 seed.
Against Lipscomb, the Lions used a second-quarter run to take control. UNA trailed 12-10 at the end of the opening period and faced a 20-15 deficit with 6:52 remaining in the second quarter. Ivy Wallen scored seven points during a 14-2 run. After a three-point basket by Savannah Stults tied the game at 22-22, a runner by Wallen at the 4:14 mark gave UNA the lead for good.
North Alabama led by as many as seven in the first half. The Bisons connected on a three-pointer with 1:16 remaining to make the score 31-28 at the break.
A three-point basket early in the third quarter pulled Lipscomb to within two points. The Bisons, however, would hit only one shot from the floor over the final 8:52 of the period. UNA responded with a 17-2 run to break the game open. Three straight baskets by Brittany Panetti pushed the North Alabama lead to 48-33. Stults and Katelyn Nunley each went 2-for-2 from the free throw line as UNA grabbed a 52-35 lead with 2:35 remaining in the quarter. Another basket by Nunley gave the Lions a 55-36 lead heading into the final period.
UNA led by as many as 26 down the stretch. A transition basket by Sarah Suttle gave the Lions a 69-43 lead at the 2:53 mark.
Panetti led all scorers with 16 points. The Lions held a commanding 44-22 lead on points in the paint. Wallen finished with 13 points while Emma Wallen tossed in 11 points for UNA. Stults also reached double figures with 10 points on the day. Carleigh Short led Lipscomb with 11 points.
Tip-off at Liberty is set for 6 p.m. (Central) on Tuesday.
