UNA MEN DROP 71-64 DECISION AT FGCU

FORT MYERS, Fla., – Four players reached double figures for Florida Gulf Coast in a 71-64 home win over the University of North Alabama men's basketball team Wednesday evening in ASUN Conference action. The third straight loss leaves UNA with an 8-17 overall record. The Lions also fall into a tie with FGCU for fourth place in the ASUN standings. Both teams have identical 5-5 league records.
 
On Wednesday, the Lions fought back from a nine-point deficit in the second half, only to falter down the stretch. A three-point basket by Kendall Stafford cut the Eagles lead to 61-60 with 2:07 remaining. The Lions, however, would not hit another shot from the floor. 
 
FGCU answered with three consecutive made baskets and also went 6-for8 from the free throw line in the final minute of play.
 
For the game, UNA attempted four more shots than the home team. The Lions, however, hit 37 percent from the floor while FGCU was 23-of-50 (46 percent), including 10 three-point baskets.
 
Florida Gulf Coast built an early 11-point lead in the first half before the Lions rallied. UNA trailed 24-13 with 9:03 remaining in the half before Christian Agnew scored nine points during an 18-4 North Alabama run. His three-pointer with 32 seconds to play gave UNA a 31-28 lead.
 
The Eagles, however, answered with a trey in the closing seconds to send both teams to the half with the score tied 31-31.
 
In the second half, FGCU stretched its lead to 59-50 before UNA made one last push. Agnew again led the way with seven straight points for the Lions before Stafford's three-pointer cut the deficit to a single point.
 
After the Eagles answered with a jumper on the ensuing possession, UNA missed its final five shots from the floor.
 
Agnew finished with a game-high 23 points. It's the fifth straight game in double figures for the freshman from Detroit, Mich. Jamari Blackmon added 14 points for the Lions.
 
Zach Scott led FGCU ( 10-15 overall, 5-5 ASUN) with 17 points.
 
After three straight road games, UNA will return home to face North Florida on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
