LIPSCOMB TOPS UNA MEN TO CLINCH ASUN TITLE

FLORENCE – Lipscomb shot 55.8 percent from the floor, including 12 three-point baskets in an 87-75 win at North Alabama Friday to clinch a share of the ASUN Conference men's basketball regular-season championship. The Bisons (23-6) earned the top seed in the upcoming ASUN Tournament while UNA (10-21) wrapped up the No. 6 seed, and will open the postseason Monday night at North Florida.

After being picked to finish last in the league standings in the annual preseason coaches poll, North Alabama completed its first Division I regular season with a 7-9 conference record.

Against Lipscomb, four players reached double figures for UNA. The Lions, however, struggled to slow down the Bisons' inside-outside game. Rob Marberry scored a team-high 22 points from the post.  Six different Lipscomb players also connected from three-point range.

North Alabama remained within striking distance in the first half. After trailing by as many as nine early in the period, the Lions used a 10-0 run to take their first lead of the night. Kendall Stafford started the run with a three-pointer from the top of the key. Tavon King then converted a three-point play of his own and followed with another basket to pull the Lions to within a single point.

Kendarius Smith then found Stafford for a transition basket to give UNA a 22-21 lead with 8:04 remaining in the first half. The lead, however, did not last long. The Bisons added two free throws on the ensuing possession to regain the advantage, then closed the half strong.

UNA trailed 32-28 after two free throws by Jamari Blackmon with 1:32 remaining.  Lipscomb got a basket by Marberry, then followed a defensive stop with two more free throws in the final minute of play. The Lions missed a three-pointer at the buzzer, leaving the visitors with a 36-28 lead at the break.

North Alabama would get no closer than six points over the final 20 minutes of play. After an early tip-in by Emanuel Littles made the score 36-30, Lipscomb responded with five straight points to push the lead to double digits.

A three-pointer by Christian Agnew later cut the lead to 60-51 at the 11:12 mark. Lipscomb, however, scored 10 of the next 12 points to grab a 70-53 lead. The Bisons led by as many as 20 in the second half before UNA closed the game on a 16-8 run.

Blackmon finished with 22 points to lead UNA. King and Stafford added 16 points each while Agnew finished with 10 points. Stafford also had a double-double with 11 rebounds. Littles just missed double figures with nine rebounds, including five at the offensive end of the floor.

Tip-off time for the Lions' ASUN Tournament opener is set for 6 p.m. (Central) on the UNF campus in Jacksonville. The game will be broadcast on the ESPN+ Network.
