FLORENCE, Ala. -- University of North Alabama senior shortstop
Peyton Sockwell of Lawrenceburg, Tenn., received the 2019 Bob Stephenson Award prior to the Lions game Tuesday against Alabama A&M.
The award was created in 2013 in honor of former long-time UNA faculty member and faculty athletic representative Robert E. "Bob" Stephenson, to recognize his support and dedication to the UNA baseball program.
Voted on the UNA baseball players, coaches and staff members, the award is presented annually to the UNA baseball team member who has contributed to the program on the field and in the classroom, showing great character, accountability and loyalty to the UNA baseball program.
The award was presented in a pre-game ceremony by Stephenson's widow, Rosalie, and UNA head coach
Mike Keehn.
On the field, Sockwell has been a four-year starter at shortstop where he has played in 188 career games with 180 starts. He has scored 96 career runs and driven in 78 for the Lions.
Off the field, Sockwell will graduate with a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree with a concentration in Professional Finance. On Monday night, he received UNA's Grady Liles Inspiration Award, presented to the most inspirational student-athlete in the Lions' athletic department.
Previous winners of the Bob Stephenson Award are Andrew Almon in 2013, Brantley Claunch in 2014 and 2015, Blake Talley in 2016,
Tyler Joyner in 2017 and
Shane Priest in 2018.
