UNA VOLLEYBALL FALLS TWICE AT SAMFORD INVITATIONAL

BIRMINGHAM - The University of North Alabama volleyball team came up short twice on the final day of the Samford Invitational Saturday, falling to in-state foes UAB and Jacksonville State. The two losses give UNA a 1-5 record on the season.

Less than 24 hours after falling to the host Bulldogs, UNA dropped a 3-1 decision to UAB. The Lions hit a season-high .271 as a team in the 22-25, 18-25, 25-21, 21-25 defeat. The match against JSU was not as competitive. The Lions struggled to final offense in the three-game sweep, falling 25-13, 25-12, 25-20 to the Gamecocks.

North Alabama will now turn its attention to the Chattanooga Classic next weekend. The Lions will play three matches on the UTC campus, beginning with a 2 p.m. showdown Friday against Manhattan College.

Against UAB, a North Alabama rally came up just short. The Blazers were on the verge of a sweep after winning the first two sets and holding an 11-3 lead in the third. The Lions, however, responded with a run of their own. UNA pulled even at 20-20 on a kill by Alyssa Dutton, then scored five of the next six points to complete the comeback.

The fourth set featured a similar script. Once trailing 12-4, UNA pulled to within three at 22-18. After a reversed call gave UAB a 23-18 advantage, the Blazers scored the final two points to secure the win.

Dutton finished with a match-high 14 kills and completed the double-double performance with 12 digs. Christina Ellwanger added 12 kills while Morgan Madasz also reached double figures with 10 kills. Breylee Linder notched 40 assists and 10 digs for the match.

Defensively, Mackenzie Sullivan led all players with 16 digs. Elizabeth Ford also had 13 digs.

Jacksonville State held UNA without a player in double figures in kills. Linder had 19 assists, but the Lions hit .102 as a team while JSU hit a season-high .425 in the finale.
