MEN’S BASKETBALL COMES UP SHORT AT JACKSONVILLE

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., - The University of North Alabama men's basketball team rallied from an 18-point deficit in the second half at Jacksonville on Saturday, only for the home team to make enough plays down the stretch to get an 85-83 win over the Lions. The loss breaks a three-game winning streak as UNA falls to 10-12 on the year, and puts the team in fourth place in the ASUN Conference standings at 5-4 in league play.

Jamari Blackmon and Christian Agnew combined for 49 points, but the Lions faced an uphill battle after a slow start. Jacksonville shot 43.6 percent from the floor in the first half to grab a double-digit lead. A putback at the buzzer gave the home team a 47-31 lead at the break.

A basket by David Bell in the opening minute of the second half gave the Dolphins their largest lead at 49-31.

UNA, however, responded. The Lions slowly chipped away at the deficit, using a 12-0 run to get within single digits. Agnew connected on a four-point play while Blackmon had baskets to bookend the run as North Alabama trimmed the lead to 49-43 with 15:58 remaining.

After Jacksonville answered with a three-point basket, the Lions used another 10-0 run to take the lead. Using full-court pressure to convert turnovers into points, UNA got a steal by James Anderson, who pulled up for a three-pointer on the right wing to put the Lions ahead 53-52 at the 13:03 mark.

The two teams traded leads down the stretch with North Alabama leading by as many as four. A pair of free throws by C.J. Brim gave UNA a 63-59 lead with 8:51 to play. The Lions, however, made only one field goal over the next 6:08 of playing time while Jacksonville made its move.

With the game deadlocked at 72-72, the Dolphins got baskets on consecutive possessions, then hit 1-of-2 free throws to take a five-point lead. Each team connected from three-point range before a putback gave Jacksonville an 82-75 lead in the final minute of play.

UNA got another three-pointer from Blackmon and a putback by Littles to make the score 82-80 with 8.8 seconds remaining. Two more JU free throws and a trey by Agnew made it a one-point game with 1.2 seconds left. Jacksonville's Deanthony McCallum then hit 1-of-2 free throws and the Lions were unable to get a shot off after the miss on the second attempt.

For the game, Jacksonville was 25-of-32 from the foul line.

Blackmon led all scorers with a career-high 27 points. The sophomore from Hoover had reached 26 points twice this season. Agnew added 22 points on the night as the duo combined to hit nine of the Lions' 11 three-pointers. Littles turned in a second consecutive double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds.

Destin Barnes led Jacksonville (11-13 overall, 4-5 ASUN) with 21 points on the night.

After three straight road games, UNA will return home to host Lipscomb on Feb. 6. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
