DOTHAN, Ala. (April 23, 2024) – The University of North Alabama men's golf team closed out the first season under Schmitz Family Head Men's Golf Coach Austin Phillips with a seventh-place finish at the ASUN Championship in Dothan on Tuesday. UNA finished the event with four individual golfers in the top 30.
North Alabama wrapped up the 2024 ASUN Championship with consistent rounds of 295, 294 and 295 for an 884 total, putting the Lions in seventh place. The Lions jumped as high as third on day two before entering the third round in sixth place. Lipscomb took home the team crown with a 16-under-par 848 total,
17 strokes ahead of second place Central Arkansas. North Florida, FGCU, Stetson and Kennesaw State separated UNA from the top two.
UNA finished 10 strokes ahead of Queens, while also beating out Jacksonville, EKU, Austin Peay and Bellarmine.
North Alabama was just 10 strokes away from finishing tied for fifth place, which would have been tied for the best ASUN Championship finish in the program's Division I History.
UNA sophomore
Eric Luo jumped as high as fourth place after starting with six straight pars to open up the third round. Luo closed out the round as UNA's top individual, tying for 17th place with a five-over-par 77, bringing his tournament total to 220. The 17th place finish is the seventh top 20 finish for Luo on the season, just one year removed from turning in two top 20 finishes during his freshman campaign.
John Logan turned in the second best score for North Alabama with a 221 total. The freshman from Wilmington, N.C. tied for 21st place, finishing just one stroke back of Luo.
Sophomore
Sebastian Bengtsson trailed Logan by just one stroke, tying for 26th place with a 222 total while junior
Chase Kaiser took home sole possession of 30th place with a 224 score. Sophomore
Corey Maher played his first round of the event on Tuesday and notched a round of 78. Maher replaced freshman
Andrew Ferworn in the final round as UNA's fifth individual golfer.
North Alabama finished with 48 birdies across three rounds of the event. Bengtsson led the team with 13, while Kaiser finished not far behind with 11. Logan twirled an eagle on the ninth hole in the final round of the event, just one of six eagles by any golfer across the three rounds.
The Lions conclude the first season under Schmitz Family Head Men's Golf Coach Austin Phillips with two team victories and a pair of individual tournament honors.
